Luca is one of our favorite restaurants in Pittsburgh. Our daughter went to school at Pitt so every time we were in the area, we went to Luca for a special night out. We have been on the road three weeks traveling with our 14 pound golden doodle, two weeks ago we made a reservation for Luca, and in the comments we told them about the dog. We asked for outdoor seating on their patio, and although they did not specifically say they were pet friendly on their site, they did not call us to tell us that they were not……until 4 hours before we we’re supposed to arrive. They did reach out a day or so ago to confirm our reservation, so we figured we were all set. We are now left scrambling to find another restaurant for this evening. Sad to say, but because of the way we were treated today we will never go back to Luca again.
On a warm summer night nothing can beat the patio atmosphere. The pancetta and veal bolognese was fabulous and meaty. The eggplant Parmesan was also good. Portions are generous. Special call or to the arugula salad. The candied walnuts and fresh goat geese perfectly tossed with balsamic vinaigrette. Finally the wait staff were attentive but not overbearing. They regaled us with stories of the celebrities who have eaten here. The Groupon reeled is in, the experience will have us coming back. And a bonus— half off bottles of wine on tuesdays.Freshly filled cannoli and warm lava cake topped it off!
I called to reserve for 2 people and kids on Sunday at 2pm. The lady said ok sure will prepare a table for you outside with a high chair. We get to the restaurant we say hi, have 2 kids with me a baby and a toddler and we go directly sit on the table where the high chair is.We were alone at the restaurant, there was only 1 couple behind us who seem to have a drink only. The table was not cleaned so not prepared) and we waited for 10 min , the lady didn’t come to us.I go in trying to search for her a complete empty restaurant no staff nothing) then she appears from down. I asked her if she can clean our table and get us the menus. Her response was don’t you see I’m packing a take away? I’ll serve you when I can. Also you went in without waiting at the entrance.Shocked: I look at her and say I didn’t see what you were doing when we went in I have 2 babies with me you could have told us to wait. And then she goes: go eat somewhere else because I don’t want to serve you.The meanest service you can ever imagine. I’ve been all over the world and never saw a server like Amber. She could have told me apologies I’ll be with you in few. Or anything nicely. Instead she was aggressive and mean and decided we’re not worth to be served!!So whoever is the owner of this place, you better put someone who knows what service is and who knows how to be nice to your customers, noting that we were alone in the whole restaurant with the other couple Sitting and having a drink outside. No wonder why the restaurant was empty! What would she have done if there was 5 tables at a time? This woman should not be recruited in the service world she should be cleaning dishes or changing garbage at the back side without any contact with customers.Remember her name Amber the mean girl! Who fails at the lowest standard of service!
I was unsure what to expect, as the 4.0 rating here normally makes me avoid a restaurant. However, as a parent of a new student in the city, I was looking for a nice restaurant for dinner with my wife and on the parent social media groups, Lucca kept coming up. Cait was our server, and she was attentive and caring yet not intrusive. The best part of all, as you would hope, was the food. We tried four main dishes over two meals (loved it so much we came back the next day with daughter in tow) and four appetizers as well. The Brussels sprouts app is unreal. A little more deep fried than I expected, but delicious and huge compared to what I find at most places. The caprese salad was fresh and delicious. The meatballs were delicious. And we had a crustini dish that was great. The salmon was perfectly cooked, the and the tenderloin papardelle dish was one of the best dishes I've ever had. The truffle papardelle was also great, and we had it on the second night with gluten free penne and it was still delicious. The only dessert we tried was the blueberry brulee cheesecake, and the crust was less crusty than I prefer in a cheesecake. But, that wasn't worth removing a star for. Cait is an asset to the restaurant and we hope to be able to have her help us when we return to town in the futuee.
