Contribuiți la feedbackThe food is excellent, the service is outstanding, and the drinks are fantastic. The clam chowder is amazing, the handmade tortillas are a nice touch, and the carne asada is really impressive.
Finding a (mostly Mexican restaurant inside of a Dutch Kasteel (Castle was...unexpected, to say the least. I'm assuming that the restaurant was (once? the property of the owners of the adjacent Auld Holland Inn, and switched hands at some point. Either way, nothing appears to have been lost in the handoff, because the food here is excellent, even if a bit off theme! My wife somehow decided against ordering her favorite, a Monte Cristo, in favor of some Carne Asada, while I went with the Steak Ranchero. In hindsight, we probably should have traded orders. While both were delicious, the Steak Ranchero included mushrooms (which I hate and my wife loves that were not listed on the menu, and I vastly preferred the taste and texture of her entrée to mine. That said, I was not disappointed. I'd order it again, sans mushrooms, if the Carne Asada wasn't on the menu. Since it is, it'll be my order of choice any time we find ourselves back in Oak Harbor it's that good!Service was attentive a bit uneven: we were asked if we were ready to order *three times* before the water arrived at our table, by different servers; the first two times within 30 seconds of our butts touching the seats. Once we had, we didn't see hide nor hair of any server, other than when our food was delivered, for the rest of the visit, until the came (a little later than I'd have liked at the end. Those nitpicks aside, I love everything about the aesthetic, and despite the somewhat confused cultural collision taking place here, nothing about it detracts from the experience. I wish more establishments would unabashedly embrace a theme, identity or culture...even if it comes to them second hand. So, call it what you want: castle, kasteel, castillo doesn't matter. Just know that when you're here, you're going to eat like a King...a Koning...or a Rey.
My wife opted for Carne Asada over her usual favorite, the Monte Cristo, while I chose the Steak Ranchero. In hindsight, we probably should have swapped dishes. Both entrees were delicious, but the Steak Ranchero came with mushrooms—something I can't stand, though my wife loves them—that weren’t mentioned on the menu. I found her dish more appealing in both taste and texture. Nevertheless, I wasn't disappointed. I’d definitely order it again without the mushrooms, but only if the Carne Asada wasn't on the menu. Since it's so good, I'll be sticking with that for our next visit to Oak Harbor! As for the service, it was attentive yet somewhat inconsistent. We were asked if we were ready to order three times by different servers before our water even arrived at the table, with the first two inquiries coming less than 30 seconds after we sat down. Once we placed our orders, however, we didn’t see any servers again until our food was delivered, which was a bit later than I would have liked. Despite these minor hiccups, I loved the overall aesthetic of the restaurant. Even with the cultural mash-up going on here, it didn’t detract from the experience. I wish more establishments would boldly embrace a theme or cultural identity, even if it comes to them secondhand. So, whether you call it a castle, "kasteel," or "castillo," just know that here, you’ll feast like royalty—be it a king, a "koning," or a "rey."
This is definitely my favorite restaurant on the island. The service is exceptional, and the food is delicious.
Okay…the atmosphere isn’t authentic Mexico BUT the food was delicious!!! We got the CHILAQUILES with Chorizo! I got the green and he got the red! It took me back to when my mom (from Jalisco, MX) would make us homemade CHILAQUILES! They weren’t soggy and still had a little crunch!! YUMMY!!Thank you!
