Contribuiți la feedbackPleasant interesting local roman site with a super viewing tower overlooking the site of the roman fort, at the moment the baths are closed for refurbishment so £1 discount is given on the entrance fee. The original baths are a little further across from the site where the previous ship inn public house was .. these were discovered underneath when demolished, nice museum displays the café food is very tasty offering hot meals snacks also the staff are lovely .. very friendly.
If you start your journey from South Shields and make your way to Wallsend, or vice versa, this restaurant is a great spot to take a break and enjoy a drink. They offer a variety of beverages, such as tea and coffee, at affordable prices, along with snacks. The restaurant also has a shop for any additional needs you may have.
It's not the most attractive or comfortable eatery but the food is good, freshly cooked to order and it's cheap! Breakfast large full English cost less than a fiver! The cafe is traditional indoors then you go out into a mod viewing/ eating area and an open balcony for sunny days. Overall a good experience and you can overlook the Roman ruins as you dine.
We enjoyed view of fort and the trip up the viewing tower and there wasn't really anywhere else to stop for refreshments nearby but café bit scruffy eg tables dirty, coffee not great and scones dry.
It's a shame that this restaurant is so good but only the locals are aware of it. I discovered it while visiting the museum. If it were in a more prominent location, it would surely be getting more attention and praise.
