Old Exeter Inn - Newton Abbot

Quite literally the worst experience I have ever had in a pub. 6 family members went for lunch today arriving around 12.20pm. At 12.30pm we ordered, my wife who is 8 months pregnant ordered the salt beef with rye bread. We were then informed that they had no rye bread so this would be replaced by sourdough. Despite several assurances over the next hour and a half it was 14.18 when the first meal came out, an hour and 48 minutes after we ordered 6 very straight forward meals. My wife’s sourdough was infact just cheap white bread which she cannot eat, the eggs on ham eggs and chips were over cooked and like rubber, the chips were clearly reheated yet still cold. The salt beef was horrendous, my mushroom and asparagus pie was pure pastry with no asparagus and very little filling at all. The gravy was like wallpaper paste and clearly just a powder added to water. The pub is very small with only a handful of tables so goodness knows how this shambles occurred. Indeed, before we received our food, nothing had left the kitchen for 45 minutes, and when it did the waitress carried one plate at a time adding to the waste of time. When we finally found someone to complain to, they insulted us by offering a refund of £25! This pub is clearly run by people with no experience or capabilities. It is under staffed, and those there have no idea what they are doing. For somewhere that is expensive this is one to avoid at all costs. Over priced, horrendous service, even worse food and a complete shambles from the minute we walked in.

Currently sat waiting for my wife; we’ve had a splendid lunch (chicken and streak pies). Mulled wine for the lady and Otter ale for me. Excellent staff, facilities and atmosphere. We will be back Thank you

What an amazing pub and historic place to visit for refreshment and sustenance. After visiting dartmoor for a 6 mile hike/run we were looking for a good place to eat and stumbled across the old exeter inn. It was a privilege to visit such a friendly pub steeped in history and welcoming to strangers. Food was great and obviously lovingly prepared (home made tomato sauce, home made pies, cheeseburgers as big as your face and a fine selection of ales and beers. Would highly recommend and cannot wait to return

Beautiful atmospheric interior Food was top quality but at high end of my price range. Very friendly staff. Well kept beer You may struggle with the menu if your a vegetarian. South African management so expect lots of meat.

The staff were excellent and very friendly! They had a wide selection of gin and rum, and they patiently explained everything to us. We stayed for a week and ended up visiting almost every night! The pub had a wonderful atmosphere.
