Cafe 1901 - Newcastle upon Tyne

Usually love the food atmosphere here, have found the service can be quite slow at times, bur understand that there may be waits during peak times. However, on this visit the customer service was unwelcoming and rude. We came in at 3:50pm to the cafe, to all the cakes and traybakes being removed from the counter and wrapped up. I asked the waitress behind the counter are they closing, are we not able to have a cake. To which she responded they were just wrapping and boxing them up ready to be put away. I myself found this quite hard and off putting to choose a cake when there's nothing to see in the counter the remaining cakes are being taken away in front of me. I said to the waitress it's not very welcoming walking into a cafe and all the bakes are being boxed up, over an hour before closing time. To which she responded the names are written on the counter, it's not hard to decide- no apology whatsoever. It's was far from the friendly service expected at a popular independent cafe in Jesmond. Making quite a hostile and cold visit overall.

During our weekend trip to Newcastle, we decided to have breakfast at this restaurant. Despite a long line outside, we were able to secure a table after 15 minutes. We were informed that there would be a 35 minute wait for food, but when our food had not arrived after 45 minutes, we inquired about the delay. Surprisingly, our food was brought out just one minute later and our server made extra efforts to make up for the delay. Thank you!

Very busy on a Saturday morning, but got a seat easy enough. Breakfast arrived before the coffee (which I think they forgot about). Good standard breakfast, but the staff are not particularly personable, but certainly not rude….possibly down to how busy they were. Overall, decent breakfast, coffee below average and service a tad lacking. Good, but not great.

I used to adore 1901 and visited frequently. The staff were friendly and the food was excellent. Unfortunately, the customer service has declined and the staff have become unfriendly. Due to this, we have decided to stop going.

Fantastic all round! Food, service, quality all top marks! Came here for brunch on our daughter’s birthday and staff were really lovely . We’ll definitely be back thank you very much for your kindness!
