My favorite Vietnamese sandwich spot for many many years. A little gem! Always those kind ladies there, service and quality of the food never changed! The butter hero it’s a heaven,I usually choose that or the fresh veggie sandwich. Vietnamese coffee very delicious if you like a stronger one. They have couple of tables you can seat down and eat there. Usually I just pick up and take it to go..If we are in Brooklyn my family always pick up here something to eat.
A no frills banh mi spot and probs one of the better ones in NYC. The banh mis are nice and crispy on the outside, but soft and fluffy inside. My go to is usually the banh mi pate thit nguoi (the combination #1). The flavors were good and ratio of pickled veggies and meat were good, but I wish they gave more meat and more pate. The cha lua was also cut a little smaller than I like it to be, but overall still a pretty good banh mi and on the more affordable end too.I was excited to see a bunch of pre-made Vietnamese dishes too, like banh beo, goi cuon and banh it tran. When you're not in the mood for banh mi, you could also get a rice box too. Got a ca phe sua da to wash down everything and it hit the spot!
Further down the main area of 8th Ave, Ba Xuyen is almost easy to miss. I came for a banh mi and their iced Vietnamese coffee during a late lunch. The grilled pork sandwich was pretty good. The pork was seasoned well, but it was a bit on the drier side. I do wish there was more pate because it would have made the sandwich infinitely better and less dry. The sandwiches are huge, definitely could be split between two people. Seems like the sandwiches are all prepared beforehand. They just heat it up and add in the veggies when you order. The Vietnamese iced coffee was very classic Vietnamese American because they used the Cafe Du Monde coffee for it. Again, this was premade. They just added ice. It's not so amazing that I would make a trek down to this area for another banh mi. However, I will say it's on par with other top rated Vietnamese sandwiches in Manhattan Chinatown.
Grabbed takeout from here and WOW. The pork roll was so so so good. The baguette was crisp and it had the perfect ratio of meat to vegetables. There's some lovely tea options as well, but the banh mi is the standout. This... might be the best Banh mi I've ever had? It's that great.
