I decided to try the vegetarian jambalaya, which came with steamed spinach and carrots instead of beef. I enjoy spicy food, and overall it was good, but the rice in the dish was a bit dry. Adding more spinach or a sauce on the side would have helped to balance it out.
The food is consistently delicious at this restaurant. A tasty choice is the kone ni makondo, which is a black chewy flour dish served with rice and roasted plantains. It is a satisfying meal. They offer dishes with medium or spicy levels of heat, and everything is full of flavor. The homemade ginger drink is potent and tasty. The black-eyed peas are a delicious roasted dish with a savory sauce. The staff are friendly and attentive.
I love really flavorful food but I ordered the 43, eggplant w coconut rice and it was just basic veg and rice. The peas and beans appeared to be cooked from frozen. The place is cute and popular. Maybe we ordered the wrong thing. Luckily I’m a weirdo and bring a baggy of travel spices on trips because I really needed the soy sauce and nooch this meal!!!! The black eye pea fritters were decent.
This restaurant offers meat dishes, but also has a variety of vegan options based on beans. The service was a bit slow, but the food was authentic and delicious. The portions were large and the prices were fair for the quality of the food.
We decided to try the Kone Ni Makondo and the Jama Jama Ni Makondo dishes at this restaurant. We also ordered the Black Eyebrow Beers, but unfortunately our server forgot to put it in and we didn't want to wait any longer. The Kone dish was enjoyable, but the rice was a bit bland, although it was better when mixed with the other flavors. The plantains were good, but not the best I've ever had. The bread had a nice kick to it. However, I found the Jama Jama dish to be unpleasantly smelly and mushy, so I didn't eat it. This may be due to my personal preference as I don't like overly bitter or vinegary greens, and I prefer them to be cooked more lightly. The portion sizes were decent, but the total bill came out to be over $28 for two lunch specials plus drinks. I would consider giving this place another chance in the future, but overall I was left feeling underwhelmed. (Updated from a previous review on 27th April 2021)
