Sushi Ryu - Nanaimo

Oh. My. Gosh. If you love flavour, start the car!! We had the red delight and the awesome roll. Heaven in my mouth. So good!! Best sushi we’ve had in Nanaimo. And we’re foodies, so we’re picky.

This is a nice place to get decent sushi. My Dynamite roll bento was tasty.The server was very friendly and did a great job.The atmosphere is bright and open, with music that matched the sushi.Tables were all nicely done up and looked clean.Nothing was perfection , but I would go again for sure.Parking: There is a small parking lot, maybe 6-8 spots? I had plenty of spots to choose from, but at a busy time, it might be difficult to park at the restaurant, though I 'm sure you could find parking a short walk away.

The food was delicious, but unfortunately, the service left much to be desired. We arrived at 7:45 PM and placed our order promptly. Throughout our meal, the staff didn’t check on us even once to see how we were enjoying our food or to refill our empty drinks. Instead, they came by to see if we wanted to order anything for last call. After waiting about 20 minutes without any follow-up, they finally approached us after we had finished eating, bringing a container for leftovers. They placed the bill on a plastic plate inside the takeout container and handed us the payment machine without saying a word. When we tried to settle up, the only tipping options presented were 22% or 25%. After we finalized everything, the staff member simply took the machine, said "thanks," and walked away.

We waited almost a half hour before our drink order was taken. It was an hour and half in the restaurant before our food arrived. Our server Hannah did not seem to value or respect our time. We witnessed tables arrive after us leave before us. Overall the food was good, but the service was beyond poor.Kid-friendliness: Not child friendly, the table setup doesn’t support having infants

Perhaps I'm spoiled by the sushi and ramen in Vancouver, but this place really fell short. The presentation of the food was nice, but it seems to be aimed at an audience that hasn't experienced better. The ramen lacked flavor; it was meant to be a miso broth, but it tasted more like plain water and noodles. We've easily made better ramen at home. The salmon oishi wasn't flame-torched, which is something I've come to expect at almost every other sushi restaurant I've visited. Additionally, everything was covered in way too much sauce.
