The Rock And Fountain Inn

We visited on Tuesday and found on our arrival it was Steak Night,. What a lucky suprise! Delicious steak, sauce and sides at fantastic value for money coupled with excellent service by Emma. Definitely recommend a visit!

Visited lunchtime 9 January as a party of five family members, two of whom were ladies in their nineties, and a dog. The booking was made several days in advance and seating requirements explained. When we arrived, no table had been allocated and it was obvious that the staff on duty were not aware of our requirements. The elderly ladies in our party were kept standing while tables were put together to accommodate us. We ordered from the two courses for £16 menu. There was a noticeably long delay before we were served our main course with no apology or explanation for this. Two of us ordered the fish and chips. Now, as the menu stated ‘fish’, we weren’t expecting prime pieces of cod but neither were we expecting a rubbery curled up piece of fish in some batter, which was hardly warm. In fact the chips were hotter. When a waitress came and asked if everything was ok with our food I explained the problem. She offered to take it back to the chef but as we had already waited a long time for our food we were not in the mood for another delay while others in our group carried on eating. There was no offer of compensation. When the main course had been cleared away we waited for someone to offer the dessert board. It didn’t happen. I had to attract the attention of a waitress to bring us the board. Another waitress took our orders. One of our party asked for the crème brûlée and was told that wasn’t on the menu as we’d been given the previous day’s board! As I’ve had to spend time on this review, I might as well point out that the glasses, containing the two ginger and lime drinks that we ordered, were not clean. As well as water stains (I assume) from the dishwasher, there were finger marks on the outside. We didn’t complain about these. We have visited this pub several times in the past, apparently under previous ownership. Maybe the management might consider whether or not they have the right calibre of waiting staff, who don’t stand around chatting, and also checking that all is ok in the kitchen.

This is our second visit and again we enjoyed our meal. Food served hot, and well laid out, all looking very appetising Thank you to all the staff

Absolutely gorgeous! Booked for lunch with my mum and 9 year old and we were very impressed. It was our first visit to the Rock and Fountain and we will 100% be back. The service was excellent, food was delicious and setting was just great.

So we went for the Christmas Festive Lunch. We don't mind waiting. But we waited quite a while. To help us wait they gave us two Christmas crackers. There was a paper hat in the cracker and suggestions on little slips of paper about how we might amuse ourselves. Not the usual crass jokes. But Hey. When our Festive menu arrived There was a bed of Turkey slices covering the horrors of what was underneath. There was a wheelbarrow of undercooked vegetables that were totally inedible. The plate was overloaded with green beans and broccoli stems both of which were not cooked properly. There is a fine line between al dente and raw. The menu mentioned pigs in blankets. OK maybe I was hoping for maybe more than one. But maybe I miss read the menu because the tiny pig in blanket was burnt and brown and so apologetic that I should have put my fork in it and insisted that it be returned to the chef and ask him to eat it. The menu also mentioned gravy. This was unseasoned and tasteless. I put salt and pepper on it but gave up. I'm really sorry here but it does get worse. The roast potatoes were not roasted. They were pale and non-descript. Roast potatoes should be golden with a crisp edginess. These were just borderline boiled potatoes. We moved here to South Wales back in 2008. We happily brought our friends to eat at the Rock and Fountain. Sadly we won't be returning any time soon.
