I like to tell myself that Neapolitan pizza is my favorite, but then why do I constantly end up running to any Detroit style pizza place that I find? It's simply irresistible. If you know, you know. And in the world of Detroit style, Iron Born is king. From the days of Smallman galley, I was hooked. A massive menu of insane pizza creations, both white and red tops....all sitting on the best pizza crust you'll find anywhere. The deep crunch of a Detroit pizza is unmatched. The Forager is a can't miss....garlic cream, roasted mushrooms, ricotta, and drizzled with honey. Hits the spot every single time. Iron Born is honestly the best Detroit pizza I've experienced anywhere, and that's included in Detroit itself. Although just a few times per year, I've been visiting Pittsburgh on business for almost a decade now. In the early days I'd try new places. I'm not ashamed to admit that over the past 5 years I have not had anything in Pittsburgh but iron born. It's that good.
If you want Detroit style pizza, this is the place to go. Absolutely delicious pizza here. Food: 5
WORSE GARLIC PULL UP AND PIZZA!! I ordered a pizza and a garlic pull up and it smelled really enticing at first but the first bit was almost a call to my dentist! I ordered pickup and took it 4minutes away to eat with a glass of beer!! But unfortunately it was so hard as a stone looks like its name just says it if you are a BORN IRON you can enjoy some of this IRON PIZZA lol!! Good luck if you wish ordering from here!! DO NOT RECOMMEND AT ALL
Man, pizza can be such a subjective thing, it’s all up to your personal preference. When I first moved here a few years ago, I met some “foodie” types who gushed about this place. I knew I’d make it down at some point, and that point was yesterday. This is Detroit style, with some noticeable differences. If you’ve lived in or visited Michigan, you know Jets, and there are a host of “authentic” spots in the Motor City and state. Pan crust pizza, square, with crispy edges from cooked cheese on the sides of the pan. Reminiscent of Sicilian, but very different, one of the main differences being that the sauce is placed on top of the cheese. And the sauce shines at Iron Born, no question. It’s bright, with a memorable tang, and fresh-tasting thanks to the herbs they’re using. Number 2 on the ranking scale for this pizza is the crust. It’s thick, yes, but it is light and airy. It’s not doughy whatsoever, not heavy. The pizza overall is not greasy, despite being slightly oily (it is pan after all) and crispy. I’m going to give a slight knock here for the pizza we tried being not that hot even though it was a busy night, and honestly the cheese, although high quality clearly, could’ve been a bit more flavorful. House made chips and dip were bangin. I have to recommend Iron Born, this could be a game changer for someone in the area or for a visitor unfamiliar with the Detroit style. There’s one or two Jets locations too locally, and if you like this I’d recommend checking those out to compare/contrast.
This is likely the top pizza spot in Pittsburgh. They offer fantastic vegetarian choices (especially the forager pie). My only suggestion is for them to stay open later.
