The cheese soup was delicious! And the gluwein was wonderful after a long hike up the mountain to the kapelle St Valentin. The service was great, and the food was really good. Wonderful view of the mountains. The decor is wonderful very Tyrolean, and wonderful fireplaces. We were there on a cool day in mid October, such a beautiful place.
We had 2 salads (with cheese and turkey), 2 beers and desserts (apple strudel and local specialty). The food was very good as well as service. We paid €40. But the view on lake and mountains is really the main attraction.
This restaurant, situated above the dam and reservoir at Zillergrund, has fabulous views. The only snag is you have to climb 105 steps up a metal staircase to get to it. Well, I did. If I'd known there was a back way there, up a steep road, I would have taken that route instead a bit less scary! There is seating inside and out. The staff are friendly. I only had a basic salad to eat, which was fine. If you are staying at The Hotel Obermair in Mayrhofen (as I was) you get a free bus ride there and back (nearly an hour each way) and a voucher towards the cost of food and drink, so this was a good value trip out. However, it is perhaps not recommended for those who don't like heights.
Words can't adequately describe this place and the experience of dining here. In a way, that experience actually starts as you make your way to the restaurant. Whether you get there by bus (from Mayrhofen or other towns nearby), by car (check with your hotelier before you drive there to see if the road is open), or by hiking, the view from the valley leading up to the dam and where the restaurant is breathtakingly beautiful. We hiked up to the restaurant on a cold and raining day, with some fresh snow from the night before on the ground in mid-July. We were delighted to find out the restaurant was open despite the poor weather. The interior of the restaurant features beautiful wood craftsmanship, even the sliding door is made off wood. It has a certain calm and magic aura that does channel Harry Potter as one of the reviewers called out. We ordered some dishes and desserts, and to be honest it's one of the best meals we had in two weeks of traveling through Germany and Austria. The strudel is to die for.The view of the reservoir and the valley below from the restaurant is just unforgettable. This is for the memory book
