Auberge du Marchand - Maria

Do not mix up the restaurant with the hotel! The restaurant is located on the first floor and has a bistro-style atmosphere. The menu and beer selection are both excellent. The staff are wonderful, although they can be quite busy resulting in slower service. We also had the chance to try the Michaud chocolate cake which was absolutely delicious! We highly recommend this bistro restaurant. The seating may be a bit close together, but everyone was friendly and helped us with ordering despite our limited French. However, we do not recommend staying at the hotel. Eat here, but choose to sleep elsewhere!

The fish chowder is amazing, the best I've ever had. The shrimp salad was great, and the waitress was very sweet. I wish I lived closer so I could eat here every week! Can't wait to come back. Mary from Franklin, MA.

Nevermind the mountains and the sea, the food at the auberge is reason enough to visit the Gaspe region. The bay of chaleur soup is out of this world and makes a fantastic meal for any seafood lover. I have commercially fished in Maine and Alaska and eaten all over Montreal, but none of those places come close to the quality and flavor found here. The Arctic char was also delicious. We literally drove three hours out of our way to eat here again. Correction to the char: it had Cherrywood syrup, not birch.

I had one of the best meals during my time in Gaspesie at this restaurant in Maria. The town itself is charming and full of character, and this spot definitely embodies that charm. While the prices at the grocery are on the higher side, the quality of the products is top-notch. They also offer a great selection of options for vegetarians.
