The Little Upton Muggery

The owner of the restaurant is incredibly impolite. Her rudeness is so extreme that it seems like she doesn't even want customers there. Despite this, the pub is worth a visit because it is truly unique. The decor is eccentric, but the owner's behavior is just unbelievable.

I stopped by this charming pub after visiting the car parts store next door. I ordered a pint of cider, but the elderly woman behind the bar, who I believe was named Muriel or Mirium, informed me that they only accepted cash. I explained that I only had bank cards on me, but offered to purchase two pints to make it worth her while. She bluntly told me to go elsewhere if I couldn't pay with cash. The pub was empty, which now makes sense why. The landlady was very rude. If you decide to visit, ensure you have cash on hand. It's a shame because it seemed like a nice little pub with the wrong person running it.

I am extremely disappointed to write this review. I have been a loyal patron of the muggery in Upton for many years and have always seen it as a welcoming and cozy pub. However, my recent experience has tarnished my opinion. Two friends of mine visited the pub during a difficult time and became emotional upon seeing a Christmas tree with decorations that reminded one of them of her deceased grandmother. The landlady, Meriam, was initially supportive and spoke with them about their feelings. However, during my visit on 22/12/23, Meriam accused my friends of touching her tree and orchestrating the events that led to my friend's emotional state. Despite our attempts to explain the situation, she rudely dismissed us and suggested we leave if we wanted to continue the conversation. This treatment of loyal customers, especially during a time of emotional distress, is unacceptable. Accusing us of fabricating drama to touch her Christmas tree is absurd and unjust. I urge others to avoid this establishment and take their business elsewhere.

Totally 100% fabulous Sunday lunch i couldn’t finish as it was so big .. starve yourself before you go … highly recommend landlady a delight and barman super friendly

Excellent, beautifully presented tuna sandwiches delicious chips side salad (including red onion, the sign of a good salad . £12, including 2 lovely mugs of tea. Exactly what we wanted on a rather grey afternoon. So, for us, it was more like a cafe. Some unkind TripAdvisors have written unfavorably about the Landlady, but she is clearly ‘old school’, and possibly in her late 70s wouldn’t suffer bad manners, I’m quite sure. And nor should she. She’s been running the Muggery for years; I’m sure she’d have a few tales to tell. Unfortunately she takes cash only, which immediately reduces her income and is a problem for customers.. We were lucky to have £15, which covered what we wanted.
