Sushi Gen - Los Angeles

Just came today for the first time and I loved it! The quality of the fish is amazing!

Simply a delight to dine here while the wait can be a bit unnerving. Located in a rather mundane strip mall, this nondescript awesome place for Sushi is a matter beyond words. The food is just simply great. Their ingredients are fresh and cultivated with utter care and attention to detail. Upon getting your name down, the feeling may be mundane as you weave through a weekend crowd even at 4pm for an early dinner. You're greeted stoically and do not be surprised by that 1-hour window before you are seated, but oftentimes they overstate the wait times. What put them on the map and solidified their fame is their lunchtime Chirashi bowl, and you can still get this on their dinner menu too. Of course, there are also many other items to dazzle your taste buds with too. The only item I was rather surprised about was how poorly executed their spicy tuna roll is. Maybe it wasn't their execution, but it tasted like an afterthought.

I used to come here often but was surprised at the rudeness of the service staff. The chef that served us have been fine and sushi itself is delicious which is their saving grace. Not sure if it’s an off day for the staff, which honestly isn’t a good excuse because your role is in customer service and there wasn’t even a line since it’s Thursday. I’ve been here on busier days like the weekends and everyone was friendly so not sure why they allow this behavior on a weekday when it’s not as packed. Not sure why they hired that one Latino dude who was barking orders “do not put the dish there!” at me in front of my friend. Very embarrassing. He could simply have collected the dish and said “please” but there was no basic customer service or manners from this guy. The Japanese lady in glasses was also yelling and rude too. There was no need to raise your voice since it wasn’t that loud inside, because again, it’s not as packed as before. It was also my friend’s first time here and she took a long drive, so I felt sorry for my friend experiencing this and leaving a negative impression of this establishment. (I’m a business owner who brought a lot of people to your restaurant, so you guys should probably be a little careful next time you talk to customers). Personally I would not bring clients here. And I brought my Japanese partner here in the past and would be wary of bringing my family and friends from Japan if they allow their staff to be this rude to their customers. So if you’re coming from Japan and trying Sushi Gen for the first time, apologies in advance. It wasn’t this bad before. The staff never apologized for their rudeness so it’s a shame that I, a customer, have to apologize on their behalf.

Best sashimi in town. We have been coming to this restaurant for decades now. Our families and extended family all come here periodically. Relatives coming from out of town, it’s a must stop whenever they are back to Los Angeles.

Super good quality fish, especially sashimi deluxe. Very highly recommended
