The Hat and Tun - London

A hidden gem in Clerkenwell! Great staff and probably the most price worthy pub in London. Quite busy after work and lots of local regulars. Keep up the good work!

This place has some amazing beers, great food and all in a lovely setting with a good atmosphere. The staff are really nice too.

I visit the Hat and Tun every Monday for their quiz. A new management team took over recently, headed by Nadia who has made me and other quiz regulars feel really welcome. I often eat here too, the food is not overly complicated but good quality and value. They have a few real ales on draught and a wide selection of spirits and wines. Due to being a little of the beaten path it is one of the less busy pubs in Clerkenwell, this adds to its attraction.

A first time visit spoilt to some extent by a litany of failings. At opening, only one beer on the hand pump, and this soon ran out without being replaced. The menu was incomplete at start of service, and to top it all, my colleague and I were removed from our seats as apparently the table was reserved for a group, although this was not mentioned during the first hour of our visit and was not indicated by any reserved notice on the table. We were given a free drink each at the bar in recompense, only, to our amazement, to see the group who had been given our table leave the pub ten minutes after we had been ousted without having eaten a thing. Whilst the manager was inept, our Sri Lankan barmaid was superb, and had it not been for her we would have left without our free tipple. In essence, a lovely pub spoilt by an inadequate management.

Strangely after years working in the area I'd never seen this pub. It's slightly hidden away. However, it is an old and atmospheric looking place. Worth going for a pint. The food however, is best avoided. There's so much competition for your custom in the area with Leather Lane and some decent surrounding restaurants. The burger I got here was pretty bland and poor quality meat, felt like it was straight out a package. The Mac Cheese was a strong cheese, which is great but became a bit much after a few bites. The mac was too soft and clearly over cooked. The price was OK but not for the quality on offer. Won't be returning for food but certainly will drop in for a drink or two. Service was unexceptional, not rude, not polite or friendly. Menu was not too appetising to be honest. Pretty mediocre looking options.
