If like us, you don't have the capacity for a full buffet breakfast or nothing offered by the hotel, then it is to cafes like this that you turn. In a prime location near the monument to the Heroes of the Peninsula War, it is a large corner cafe, clearly very popular with nearby office staff. For breakfast there is a large variety of cakes and pastries, as well as toasts, sandwiches croissants etc. all are very fresh, and served with bustling efficiency by the team of pink shirted waiters. I counted 6 staff behind the counter and four out front, so you do not wait long before ordering, and being served. With your order you are given a magnetic card, which records what you had, and makes checkout easy, letting the staff get on with their service. An interesting place to watch the world go to work.

We found this quite by chance as we were looking for somewhere to eat that was convenient to the hotel where we were staying. It is a cafe/restaurant with a wide range of snacks and drinks and ideal for a simple meal at any time. It is light and airy and gives a good impression of being well looked after. The staff are very welcoming and friendly and the prices are very reasonable. We particularly like the fact that as well as the usual cafe meals they always had a selection of local dishes that we changed every day which they were happy to explain and were really good. Overall we were very happy and thus we made it the place where we ate regularly. It is not far from the university and the Entrecampos metro station.

Located next to the Entre Campos metro station in Lisbon this 'pastelaria ' offers home-made local pastries for a really good price. Try the pao de deus (sweet bread-like pastry with coconut on top), the sweet pastries filled with custard cream and the sandwiches with slices of grilled pork meat. We had breakfast 2 times here and we didn 't pay more than 6 EUR for 2 persons (incl. coffee and tip) each time. Strongly recommended if you stay nearby!
