Cindy I discovered O Regueirão just downstairs from our B B digs in the lower end of Alfama. We came downstairs looking for something to eat, after having parked our gear in the apartment. The door to our apartment building was flanked by two doors, each of which looked like it led to a different restaurant. . . . We soon found out that each door led to the same place. . . . We looked at the picture menu posted on one door and then looked at the hand written sign the other. While we were standing there, with me translating the sign for Cindy, one of the folks in the restaurant, came out and, speaking perfect English, invited us in. Cindy asked what one of the menu items was. . . . It 's a chicken dish, the lady, Sandra, said. Here, let me show you. . . . We went inside and Cindy I were very happy with what we saw: pieces of roasted chicken with cauliflower roasted potatoes. So we sat down and ordered. . . . Sandra suggested olives and bread and cheese. We accepted that invite. Then something to drink. Wine was perfect. . . . The portions were perfect for a couple gringo travelers on their first day in Lisbon. The wine was excellent and the cheese and bread and olives were very tasty. Good quality, well presented, tasty food for travelers. . . . O Regueirão became a regular stop from then on out. . . . Breakfast the next day two eggs, ham, toast and potatoes was filling and prepared just the way your average gringo would like. We sat and ate with the rest of the folks from the neighborhood who came in for breakfast or coffee. And the coffee was perfect. We hit that pretty often, a couple times a day. . . . Marta is an excellent chef. . . . The sandwiches were wonderful tasty, and the bacalhao com natas (a kind of quiche sans crust, with cod and shredded potatoes baked in a ceramic dish) was heavenly. . . . Our last meal there, the afternoon before we departed for home, was roast pork loin with fries. We also got a plate of rice, the usual olives bread. Now I 'll tell you that Cindy is an excellent cook and that her roasts are delicious, but I have to admit that Cindy I were both impressed with Marta 's recipe. Very tasty. And almost too much food for one person on the plate. . . . If you 're looking for a clean, friendly, local place in the area of Alfama near the Museo do Fado, I don 't think you 'll find a nicer place to have breakfast, lunch or an early dinner. . . . Note that O Regueirão isn 't open weekends and they close for the evening around 6:30 pm. But from sun up until then, you 'll find Marta, Sandra the rest of the crew serving up wonderfully home cooked, delicious food for travelers and all the neighborhood folks. Definitely worth the little trip up the cobblestone street and around the corner.
