I HATE THAT PLACE IS SO GOOD. As a Vietnamese born and raised person, this joint is a gem. Vietnamese cuisine is so intricate, yet mama Yen offers it all in high quality. I don’t know how she does it (slavin in the kitchen) all, any ONE of her offerings: Phố, Bánh Cuốn, Thách Chế, etc. is a full restaurant in Vietnam, Houston, or Orange County. Great vegan alternative options too for my friend. Thank goodness we’ve got an EV since we plan to commute here often. ??
This restaurant was highly recommended by a Vietnamese friend so I was excited to try it after their grand reopening. The staff greeted us with such a warm welcome when we first walked in, and we were told to seat ourselves. About 15 minutes later a waitress came to take our order and she was rude. I didn’t catch her name, and I don’t believe she gave one but here’s a physical description short, long dark hair pinned up, a little overweight, possibly Hispanic with a total RBF.Anyway she comes to take our order and I tell her we’re not ready yet, she steps away and comes back less than 5 minutes later with an attitude that suggests I need to hurry and place my order. I still wasn’t ready but I took this opportunity to ask questions about the menu which appeared to have annoyed her she cut me off mid sentence to ask me “So what will you be having?”I ignored her and continued to ask questions until my guest and I had made our decision. The restaurant had 4 other patrons, 2 waiters 2 busgirls on staff. It wasn’t busy at all.About 15 minutes later we get our food, first my guest’s pho then a couple minutes later my rice plate. The waitress had a problem when I asked for chopsticks for the rice plate stating “That’s an unusual ask, no one has ever requested before. It doesn’t normally come with chopsticks but I’ll do it for you this one time.” She continues to babble on about something while handing me chopsticks but I ignore her and just say thank you as I proceed in conversation with my guests. The food was okay. I don't think Yen herself was in the kitchen that day, food didnt taste authentic, and honestly was a little heavy handed on spices in some dishes and not enough spices in others. The grilled shrimp was dry and overcooked and one cold noodle dish with strips of pork was flavorless. The rice wasn’t fresh, definitely leftovers that were warmed and served. But overall, everything else on my rice plate was okay. The pho was good, packed with flavor, but my friend described it as “heavy.” Portion sizes for both dishes were generous. The lemonade drinks were nothing to write home about, but good, I got the passion fruit, and my guest the berry lemonade. Made with real fruit and seeds in the drink.I tried to alert the waitress's attention for condiments but of course, she ignored me and pretended not to see me. No one, at any time came to check on us or see how we were doing. I had to go to the register to ask for condiments such as the fresh crushed chili and even that was a hassle dealing with this rude waitress. My grand total for pho, lemonade drinks, and a rice plate was $56.64 absolutely no tip of course! Not a lot of food for such a steep price.Overall, the food was okay. Service leaves much to be desired waitress was terrible but the other staff members seemed okay. The cook was really nice and would speak to guests as they checked out through the chef’s window. Atmosphere is clean and chill. Prices are a little high but in this economy everything seems a little too high.Would I try it again? Possibly, my friend raved about this place so I would try it again to see what all the fuss is about. Preferably on a night Yen is in the kitchen and they have good service.BTW: I enjoyed the food at Pho Mee in Royal Palm beach better. The pho is lighter and not so heavy feeling afterwards. Also, the waiter is chill.
Showed up on a Friday night one hour before closing to try this restaurant that's been on my bookmarked list for a while. To my surprise, the restaurant was bustling with people, despite the fact that its location is in a run down plaza..which was a telling sign that my meal was about to be a good one. It was too warm outside to order soup, and they had sadly sold out of their banh mis, so I decided to order bún, Yen's vermicelli supreme, which listed that grilled pork, sausage, shrimp and egg roll were to accompany it. My husband ordered stir fried noodles with shrimp and squid, and we got chicken wings (5) for an app. Since we didn't order ahead and we were taking it to go, there was a bit of a wait, but I didn't mind taking a look at the goodies they were selling by the counter and in the fridge. Got home and opened up the containers to find huge easily shareable portions and mouthwatering smells all around. First up the twice fried chicken wings. OMG. They were so crispy, yet held the flavor of the fish sauce marinade so well, it was an amazing combo! Fish sauce may be an acquired taste but if you like a sweet/sour/salty combo then you'll appreciate this wing flavor. Do not pass on these. Next, my vermicelli noodles were so so good! They had a hearty helping of meat, noodles and came with fresh mint and bean sprouts for garnish. I was a little put off by the absence of shrimp and egg roll that were supposed to come with the meal according to the menu, but the dish was so delicious I just let it go. My husband's seafood stir fried noodles were also tasty, but I thought my meal was better I was very full from everything and still had leftovers for the next day. Definitely will be returning and telling everyone about Yen's!!
Little place, lots of take out and about 8 tables. We sat inside but there are tables out side as well. Egg rolls were nothing special but the beef broth excellent
