We both opted for the fixed three course menu at about 22 euros a head. My wife said the oysters were as good as she had ever eaten. For the main course we had the mussels cooked en shell over a raging hay fire (on the other side of the road! . They are served on a bed of burn hay, the slightest pressure of your hand opens the mussels and taste is divine. Desert on the fixed menu is two scoops of locally made ice cream (lots of different flavours to choose from . They do have a wine list but we stuck to a carafe of local wine red wine served chilled. It is such great fun from start to finish. Would I go again? Absolutely.
We visited L'Escale de l'Huitre whilst on holiday in Royan and Bordeaux. The place is very unassuming and not on the tourist trail. Tables are formica, seats basic and the building is a shed. Who cares? The oysters are incredible no matter which size and quality we sampled. The moules eclade were the star of the show. The pine blocks carrying the moules are engulfed in flaming pine needles across the road from the restaurant and brought to the table still covered in a light ash and very hot. The taste is orgasmic. All the juices stay in the shell augmented by the resin of the pine needles and the smokiness of the pine. All washed down with Charentes Rose wine. We want one in England!!!
Venus to the fair of Poussay (Vosges). For 2 years we have tasted oysters and bought them. Very good oysters and fleshy. Long live next year.
