Restaurant Scherz - Köln

Very nicely furnished and cozy restaurant with Austrian specialties. the food we had was good and the staff was very friendly. Unfortunately, the waiting times were ridiculous, even if the food was freshly prepared. the warm potato salad, which should go with our carving, was served shortly before the carving so that it was cold when we finally had to eat what was a shame. for these prices we expected a better service.

As a fan of the old joke we have been trying to reserve here for months. I had already lowered my expectations after hearing from disappointed friends complaining about bad service and a dramatic decline in food quality, but I was hoping that the bad news was just one one-off. I have a table for opening times to avoid a complete restaurant (and more stress for the waiting staff). starters were table top soup served luke warm, and the bowl came sans broth. so we sat and waited for almost minutes that the lukewarm broth is served over the now bowl of the crooked, the broth pieces and the small emptying. we point this to the waiter who began to show his stress when the restaurant was filled. the salmon (started) was excessively fat and overall a poor quality cut of fish (and thus overpriced). main dishes were all disappointing, especially the white carving, with a tasteless broth, and the meat was dry and hard! I've never had a bad carving! the tafespitz was simply placed on all fronts (dry meat, small broth), like the dish with different meats (heart, leber). we waited for the table to be cleaned, although we had asked the service staff twice to bring the dessert menu and another bottle of water. dessert ordered another long waiting period followed until we got dishes: the imperial s. was quite good, while the apfelstrudel was mediocre and again the ice that went with him, after the strudel was put on the table. how difficult or impossible it is to bring all parts of a plate at the same time.? apart from the poor quality of meat dishes, which was most aggravated was the fact that the staff simply did not allow to use this size of a restaurant. simple request for another bottle of water has been forgotten. we asked about the check as soon as the dessert came, but had to wait for minutes. whatever the necessary ratio of service personnel to the number of tables is, is obviously underused (painful). how sad! I miss the old restaurant.

The venue is located in the student district of köln. parking on the street is possible, but the available parking lots are often occupied. they have a not very large indoor area only with air conditioning. the menu was not big, just one page,...I was told that this is because renovation work in the kitchen. we had love with chanterelles, avocado and kalb, all real Austrian dishes. eating was really good. they serve only Austrian wine, we had on glass rose and a glass “Gruener Veltliner”, that was good, but not cheap. the service was professional and friendly.

Sat with great expectations, but his simply overpriced brewhouse food. eating is okay, nothing really special. the service is good and they have an interesting wine menu. everything in all it is not great and I probably won't come back. huge output. they only take cash and German debit cards. after all the great reviews I was disappointed.

I had no idea when we made the reservation what an enjoyable and satisfying dining experience this would be. Austrian cuisine at its finest in this great neighborhood (viertel) of Sülz. The restaurant is relatively small, but the kitchen makes a big impression. The chef's...welcoming little cup of soup was the first surprise. Made with red cabbage, a japanese pepper and something else I can't recall, it was a taste buds' delight. Next I had my appetiser/vorspeisen: a type of lamb paté plate. It was something I wouldn't normally order but it was very nicely prepared, presented and tasty. My wife had the smoker meat plate, also very nicely prepared and presented with bits of horseradish shavings and delicious. My main course was a glattbutt fish on a bed of quinoa. Very flavorful. Even my glasses of Salzl wine went really well with the meal. The grande finale was the dessert, a must if you've never had it. And the Scherz is probably the place to try it, unless, of course, you go to Austria. The Kaiserschmarrn seemed to take a half hour to prepare and we kept peeking toward the kitchen to see if it would come, but at last it did and it was worth the wait. It was indescribably delicious is all I can say. Look up the recipe and ingredients for the details. The server was very polite, professional and friendly. It was an upscale meal and so was the price, but a real treat. Find the Restaurant Scherz and enjoy.
