While on a trip through the Margaree area to see the beautiful fall foliage, my wife and I stopped at the Big Intervale Fishing Lodge. We were a touch lost and looking for directions to Cape Clear, a local look off(google it, it's worth checking out! in that area of Cape Breton. The lodge is in one of the most beautiful setting on the island with the Northeast branch of the Margaree River across the road, mountains all around and a view of a waterfall right out the front door! I felt as if we'd stepped onto the page of a calendar. We did not eat or take a room or cabin at the lodge but I wanted to mention that the lady who greeted us, named Ruth, was an absolutely lovely person to speak with. She advised us that it was quite late in the day to find Cape Clear for it would be dark soon. She did, however, use one of their pamphlets which has a map of the area on it to draw out the route. So, next fall, we'll be ready find the place we didn't on that day but still had a lovely drive and met some very nice people. Though we were not guest or diners, Ruth took the time to greet us and make us feel welcome. She helped us with directions and advise about the area. She displayed the utmost kindness towards us and was more than happy to help us out. Thank you very much, I wish you much success for many more seasons. Perhaps we need to unwind at your lovely location with it's river and waterfalls.
Also known as The Salmon Camp This literally is the end of the road, but so worth it. Big Intervale was a real town in 1900, but now is the most remote accessible portion of the Margaree River. The drive from the Margaree Valley is a step back in time and a chance to soak up Nature 's beauty. Our European hosts prepared a lovely dinner of scallops and shrimp with garlic cream soup followed by maple syrup vanilla ice cream and tea. Such quality in the wilderness is unforgettable. If you are new to the area, you may need help with the directions. Good luck.
People drove hours to come to this restaurant for the food! The pork chop with bacon, salmon and steaks are all very delicious. I wish I stay long enough to try all the dishes. The dessert of apple pie with ice cream are so good! Yum, yum, yum! They also had the best gravy (must be a secret recipe ! The food is one of the highlights in this trip!
The Salmon Camp is a hidden gem in a remote location. Our trips from Tennessee are not complete without the 30-minute drive from Margaree Valley. While we usually visit in the summer, it's the snowmobile season that is busiest for them. Tonight, we dined with another group of tourists and some golfers. There is something special about enjoying fine dining in the wilderness of Cape Breton. We all opted for the fresh halibut with mango curry sauce, which was delicious. I also enjoyed the cream of garlic soup, but unfortunately, I was too full to try the fresh blueberries and ice cream. Overall, it was a memorable experience with excellent hosts, and the adventurous drive was well worth it.
