Mission Taco Joint - Kansas City

I had a disappointing experience with the vegan burrito. It was truly inedible. I can't help but think that no one from the staff has actually tried it and enjoyed it, which is quite unfortunate in 2024. The vegan meat and cheese seemed to be of low quality—especially the dry Daiya cheese that doesn't melt at all. The dish could really benefit from better vegan protein options, like seasoned and cooked TVP similar to al pastor. Anything would be better than the unpleasant fake meat they currently use. A splash of lime juice or some fresh cilantro, along with a switch from that awful vegan cheese to toppings like peppers, pico de gallo, or onions, could make a world of difference. The taste was reminiscent of an ashtray. The server even admitted that their vegan options aren't good, which we already knew. On a positive note, the salsa was tasty. If you’re vegan, I would strongly recommend avoiding this place—it was just not good.

I ordered the chips and salsa along with the vegan version of the mushroom taco. The chips were tasty, but I found the salsa a bit too mild for my liking. The taco itself had a great flavor. The waitstaff was friendly and was very accommodating when it came to making the mushroom taco vegan. They do have their menu clearly marked, but it can be a bit confusing since they use "V" for vegetarian and "VG" for vegan. I really wish all restaurants would use "VT" for vegetarian and "V" for vegan instead. On a positive note, I loved the interior of the restaurant.

This is such a fantastic late-night spot! The mushroom tacos are absolutely incredible!

They have a vegan burrito and vegan soft taco option. Tasty! Also the mushroom taco I made vegan and subbed the goat cheese for vegan cheese. My vegan twin and I would go back. They had the patio doors open with a nice breeze. Lots of fun mural art around the area.

I had a great night, and the mushroom tacos were fantastic!
