Masala Munchies - Houston

Very nice in house loops spices, as if ground at home, especially the spices that are naturally like coriander, mustard seeds. Chat masala and sambhar masala are great mixtures. We prefer flour from here rather then old packed brand flours. But quality comes at the price, so prepared for higher prices the usual.

We stumbled upon this place while exploring Olympic Plaza after a satisfying meal at Heavenalaya restaurant. We were impressed with the variety of sweet and savory snacks available here, including gift-packed items for vacations and even popcorn. A kind young man offered us samples of fresh items at the counter, one of which we ended up purchasing (a yellow narrow rolled crepe with a soothing coconut filling). The mango lassi was really good, not overly sweet. The samosas were also unique, with a much thinner pastry shell. We will definitely be returning to try more of their fresh daily items.

Chandrika Masala is a small family-owned spice shop that specializes in freshly ground spices. My Indian friends introduced me to their store, as they were tired of the low-quality spices available in supermarkets here. I am grateful to have found Chandrika Masala, as it is the first place outside of India where I have found truly exceptional spices. The prices may be a bit higher, but the quality is definitely worth it. I purchased a large bag of turmeric and Garam Masala for approximately $15, which is a great deal.
