Ordered the chicken curry which was completely inedible due to being the spiciest thing I have ever eaten. Other guests I was with tried it and agreed. Another friend had also ordered this and had tears streaming down her face. When we passed this on to the staff, instead of being understanding we were told the chefs didn’t think it was spicy at all. The chefs started shouting at us. And when we got to speak to the manager, she came over and was very unhelpful told us ‘the kitchen can’t win’. Abysmal customer service and were told we could have £5 off the chicken curry with no apology.
AVOID!!! Went for a meal in a group of nine. Two meals were curries. When these arrived they were inedible because they were too spicy. A few others tried and agreed. When the bill arrived I explained I wasn’t comfortable paying full price for them. Manager not in so spoke to the chef. He was immediately aggressive, intimidating and shouted at me and across the bar area, bringing other members of staff over to intimidate me. He then shut the door in my face. Spoke to the manager (who had returned to the restaurant) and her response was “the kitchen can’t win because people ask for hot curries then say it’s too hot.” Got £5 out of £15 off the curries and no apology. Poor food, terrible customer service, horrible staff. AVOID AT ALL COSTS.
What a place for a great meal. Really good value for money with large portions too. 3 slices of roast beef with lots of veg, potatoes, etc it was a struggle to finish it, but too good to waste. The staff were really friendly and service was fast and efficient. Definitely worth a visit.
Just had a lovely meal at the Portland Hotel restaurant. The gentleman who greeted and served us was professional, very pleasant and can’t fault him at all. We had sea food linguine and homemade burger and chips, both were delicious. Will return in the near future and certainly recommend.
When I stayed at the Portland the new owners had only reopened it two weeks before. Despite the obvious amount of work that entailed, they were very attentive, accommodating and cheerful. I got a couple of tours of the old hotel, which retains much of its beautiful architectural detailing from a century (or more? ago as well as lovely period furniture. My room had been fully updated and was very comfortable and private, although there was a slight musty smell, which I expect will just take a little time to disperse. The breakfast was generous and fresh and Caroline was a delight to talk to. The new owners seem so excited to be bringing the whole hotel up to date and I think it's a very worthy undertaking because the result will be fabulous. I hope I have a chance to stay there again and see The Portland in her new glory.
