Contribuiți la feedbackI 've been visiting the area for the last 15 years. A lot has changed. Some places that were once great no longer are. But a few have gotten better....and in the case of The Bowes I 'm going to use the word great. I stayed for two weeks while excavating at Vindolanda. The food? Superb. Best steak pie I 've ever had. Curry was also outstanding but be sure and ask which chef is cooking, it will influence the spice rankings! Eddie the bartender will pour your a friendly pint, Astrid and Catherine are almost mother hens in their efforts to make sure your stay is comfortable. Ian the owner often gave people lifts to start their day, although for me it was a pleasant 35 minute walk up Chainley Burn to the dig site. Also note excellent rail connection from the station just down the street and at least some useful bus links. Our little band of excavators has decided that The Bowes will be our local for all future seasons.
Loved the Sunday dinner. So much food but very enjoyable. Room very comfortable and clean. Highly recommended!!
Not a cosy, traditional pub but nor does it pretend to be. It's spacious and nicely decorated and presented. A good selection of ales and though we didn't eat here the menu appeared straightforward and reasonably priced. I imagine it's a well appreciated local asset.
Staff exceedingly friendly and polite. Food was gorgeous. One took one star though as could do with some more vegetarian options, but mum enjoyed her tofu curry. Toilets were pristine and so was whole pub. Lovely atmosphere and would happily visit again...shame I don't live anywhere nearby!
We enjoyed our stay very much. the rooms have recently been renovated to a high standard. eating is excellent, especially the authentic Thai dishes. easy access to so many sights. to be in the middle of the wall. comfortable journey to crag side an amazing NT property. if they do not want to drive all the time, there are five minutes to walk to the train station.
