Dames Kitchen - Hackensack

We did not visit the restaurant but we did enjoy the food. LOL The first order was brown stew red snapper. It was well prepared, nicely seasoned and tasty. The salad was nice we could have eaten more! We enjoyed it so much we ordered again the next day. We ordered the stew peas this time. It was meaty and also well seasoned. Two nice meals delivered via Uber Eats!

Stopped here for breakfast recently. I was there about 7am on a Monday morning, both shocked and surprised they are open at that time. I had the ackee saltfish with a side of callaloo and a bottle of sorrel. The food was good and I received my order very quickly. Very good sized portions as well. It is a bit out of the way from my house but they do offer delivery through Uber eats so I will take advantage of that. There were two women working behind the counter, both friendly and attentive and it helped make the whole experience that much better.

My wife and I frequent the Family Out Islands of the Bahamas, and when there, one of her favorite meals is curry goat. So to surprise her for our anniversary and her birthday which occur only a few days apart (helps me remember both! , decided to bring home some goat curry plus other assorted island fare. To the best of my knowledge, there are no Bahamian restaurants in the area, but there’s a similarity in food across the islands of the Caribbean with local variations. After some online searching, and having to make a decision between two very well rated Jamaican restaurants, tossed a coin and 14 Parish Caribbean Kitchen won. Kitchen is an apt description. This is not a restaurant. There is no table service. There are no tables! This is like going into mom’s kitchen, taking a look at what’s simmering on the stove, and if not to your liking, asking mom to make something else, which she gladly does. Well maybe not, but here they do! The menu is extensive. Thank goodness its online as I studied it for half an hour before making my choices: BBQ j chicken and j ribs, both meat only, goat curry and oxtails, boh luncheon specials, and an order of peas and rice. First, portions are generous. You won’t go hungry. And as we did, you’ll probably wind up enjoying your selections the next day or evening. All the meats were very good, spiced perfectly for each type, and tender. We both would have liked to see the goat and oxtails served with more gravy which is what we’re used to in the Bahamas. But that’s a minor quibble. We were disappointed with the peas and rice as the peas were few and far between. But then, that’s just a side dish. All in all, if you want some authentic Caribbean food and don 't have it in your budget to fly down to the islands for dinner, drive over to 14 Parish Caribbean Kitchen. Bring some food home, turn up the thermostat to 80, put on some Bob Marley, open a Red Stripe or mix up your favorite island drink, sit back in your favorite chair, put your feet up, pretend that you 're at the beach and then enjoy some authentic island food. Total for our selections was $38.

I have visited this restaurant a few times in the past and have enjoyed what I purchased. However, the last time I visited this restaurant an incident occurred which will forever prevent me from eating here again. I Ordered a saltfish and butter bean and 2 veggie patties from 14 Parish Caribbean Kitchen in Hackensack, NJ. The fish and beans tasted expired when I got to work so I called them and told them I’d bring it back after work. After work I brought the dish Back uneaten with everything in the plate. Upon arrival with the entire dish and receipt in hand, I was told basically that I didn’t know what I was tasting and maybe it was the ketchup in the dish that I didn’t like. I knew that wasn’t the case, as I had this dish from this restaurant previously and it did not taste like this. Additionally, my family is Jamaican and cooks this dish with ketchup too and I know what ketchup tastes like in butter beans and saltfish. What I was tasting was an extremely expired flavor. Eventually a man who seemed to be the manager/owner came out, gave me bad faces, and verbal attitude asking out loud and across the store to the lady at the register “if I was ruding off myself” amongst other things. He basically tried to bully me telling me I could not receive a refund because I ate the food. To me the most interesting part of that statement was that the food was actually untouched down to the dumplings. Additionally, I actually did not request a refund. I only wanted something else that was not expired.His bad looks and attitude continued for over 5 minutes in front of other customers. The lady at the register actually felt bad, apologized for his behavior, and walked over and told him that I was not giving her an attidtude. Eventually the man who gave me attitude wanted to speak with me and tried to set things right stating “respect respect” but for me it was too little and way too late. The dish I purchased cost $8. It’s a shame all of this transpired over an $8 dish, which had in fact went bad/expired. Very poor customer service!! I will not eat here again. Reggae kitchen in Teaneck, NJ on Teaneck Road has a friendly staff and the food is good. Additionally Mammas Kitchen On Vreeland in Paterson, NJ has the BESTTTTTT Jamaican food I’ve ever had from a Jamaican food restaurant in the USA! The j is real j and their special sauce is out this world. I placed a very large order at Mammas for my company’s event to feed 300 people. Not only did the food arrive hot but it was amazingly delicious and the staff was very respectful the entire time.
