These grapefruit sized rice balls are stuffed with your favorite ingredients and then fried. Delicious. Great prices and good portions make Sushi Balls a great stop...for a filling snack or a light meal.
It's just what you think sushi ingredients inside a ball of sticky rice, lightly fried. It's great! A bit of chipotle sauce soy sauce, and it about got me addicted! It's a cool combination of a Mexican recipe (ball o rice) with Mexican...flair. I've been telling all my friends about it, and I look forward to coming back. Great service I love the red painted tree origami cranes! P.S. if you get there, and it's busy, it's worth the wait. Also, the owner said you can call ahead, and they'll tell you if there will be a wait.
This place is unlike any other in Guanajuato, and not exactly very Mexican, as one can tell from the name. Some other places do rice balls or maki rolls, but no one does it at this price (28 pesos for a grapefruit-sized Sushi Ball, 35...pesos for a Maki roll), and they are pretty good. The others i tried were either not that great or way too pricey. Sushi Balls have been recommended to me by 2 or 3 friends already, and it 's a shame because now every time i go they are either full or very busy. Best time to go is 1pm or after 4pm but even then you cannot be assured you 'll get a table. You can call to order a take away in advance, though, so you dont have to wait and during student holidays you can usually get a table easily. The place is small but hand decorated (even in the kitchen) and on a nice plaza. It 's clean and service can be very quick, depending on how busy they are of course. Soft drinks are very cheap (10 pesos) and they also have some exotic teas, plus some Japanese imported sodas and packaged foods, but i always get the same thing: a limonada and a 'Pokebola ' or the Maki Especial Tempura. The good thing for me, who doesnt like seafood, is that they have plenty without shrimp or fish, so even if you hate sushi you could well still enjoy a Sushi Ball or their fried vegetarian Maki roll. And i 've found they let you modify ingredients anyway, so you could ask them to remove something you dont like. Finally, i like the fact you can choose to have the food fried crispy or non fried healthier. Most Mexican food is quite greasy so this comes as a welcome change. The only problem with this restaurant is that it 's becoming too popular therefore sometimes too busy, i cant always get a table. I eat there about once a week though.
Sushi Balls is our favourite cafe for the evening meal because of the flavours, price, and ambience. The cafe is on Plaza Los Angeles so it is possible to sit there and watch the evening life of Guanajuato ebb and flow around you as you...eat. The prices are great the Mexicana in $28 MN but many other types to choose from, none of which are expensive.
