Contribuiți la feedbackThis place is so cosy and sweet literally a converted house. Came on a Saturday night and found service to be extremely friendly and fast. There was a great variety of pizza flavours and they didn't disappoint! Crispy base and tasty toppings. Great that you get the choice of small/medium/large or large half and half. Worth stopping for if you're passing through!
Paid a visit to Cuckoo with three kids in tow (two teens and a 9 year old). The smell of wood fire pizza lured us in!<br/ <br/ Two shared a large pizza which was ENORMOUS. Plenty for left overs the next day. Other half enjoyed a vegetable stack but they forgot to supply the salad promised on the menu which was a disappointment. <br/ <br/ I and another child had a small pizza each which were a decent size and very tasty.<br/ <br/ When the wait person came to check it was too late to redress the missing salad issue so they supplied a desert free of charge to compensate.<br/ <br/ Nice cosy cafe with good service.
Cuckoo has a long and important place in greytowns culinary scene. Prior to being cuckoo it was a special cafe which was going to be a hard act to follow. The young first owners set the pizza menu, nicely giving each type a bird name, and creating what was clearly the best pizzas (as well as pasta) in the region. When the second owners took over we held our breath would they get rid of the old favourites fortunately they didn't sensible but instead added cheesecakes as well! I'm not sure as to the sense but I'm sure some people like cheesecake personally I loath the creatures. Recently under third ownership and now with the old villa hemmed in by a newly built real estate agents, the breath holding occurred again. And once more the pizzas with the ornithological names remain safe. Service is good, relaxed and friendly. The beer list is getting better with each owner. The pizzas are the same if not better. My favorite has always been the albatross a rare smoked fish pizza that I sometimes recreate at home. Blackbird is also delicious. The potato pizza last time I had it could do with a little more salt or preferably capers and anchovies otherwise it can be a bit bland. The new owners may have adjusted that however. The restaurant is in a rumpty old student villa that could have been shipped up from the Dunedin campus. Highly recommended for the pizzas.
Great pizzas, lovely staff. Pity the $10 corkage PER BOTTLE is at the top end of the scale.
Lunch at Cuckoo calls for some tough decisions: pizza or pasta? Daily specials board or extensive menu? We started off with coffee then chose pasta dishes. I had chicken and bacon pasta with sun dried tomatoes and parmesan in a creamy sauce delicious! I really appreciated being able to have spaghetti in place of fettuccine all part of the excellent service. Cuckoo's decor is quirky and spread out in an old homestead. There is plenty to look at, from brightly decorated walls, old fashioned chandeliers and butterfly adorned toilets. Our only regret is that we were too full from our main course to enjoy dessert. Never mind next time!
