I hadn 't been here in years but went today for breakfast with some neighbors and enjoyed it. Of course, grits, bacon, toast and a fried egg are pretty standard fare. I prefer my fried eggs OVER WELL. And I always stress REALLY WELL incinerated make it like a Frisbee. I got my overwell this morning and MAN! It was the tenderest overwell I 've ever had and I used to be the home economist for the SC egg board! Excellent job by the line cook. Our waitress was excellent, fun, personable and she pretty much provided a never ending cup of coffee. My cup never emptied because she was so diligent in making sure we were well cared for. Plenty of good food and coffee for under $10. I think I 'll go back soon! Oh and a spacious, on site parking lot as well.
Tommy is a very nice man who visits every table and thanks everyone for coming to his restaurant. I had lunch there. It was a business lunch for us to review several documents. They made a special arrangement for our table to provide extra room. The food is cafeteria style with a wide choice of entree's and sides. I had the turkey and dressing with collards, cornbread, fried okra. It was all very good. The cornbread is on the sweet side, which is not my favorite way of preparation, but still good. The service was attentive and quick. The restaurant was perfect for low noise levels. We decided our monthly meeting needs to be here from now on. I understand breakfast is their specialty, so I will have to visit and try breakfast soon.
My niece treated me to breakfast before our family reunion. It was my first time dining at Tommy's Country Ham House. You seat yourself upon arrival and find the menus already on the table. I ordered two pancakes and two slices of bacon. Unfortunately, the bacon was chewy instead of crispy and the pancakes would have been better if the syrup was less sweet. The syrup was overly sugary. Despite this, it's a pleasant spot for breakfast and a nice touch that Tommy himself comes around to check in on how you're doing.
I was deeply, deeply saddened to hear about Tommy 's Country Ham House; affectionately known as The Ham House , announce their closing at the end of this month. Started in 1985, The Ham House has served the community with fresh, home-style cooking, and played host to many a visiting politician; pictures of whom are posted along the walls leading up to the food line. As well known as the restaurant is owner Tommy Stevenson, who is a local legend in sense, and loved by all who knows him. I personally have been coming here with my family since I was 18 months old, and the fine folks at Ham House, especially owner Tommy, are like family too. Knowing I had limited time to visit, I took an anniversary in the family as a good opportunity to stop in for lunch, celebrating not only a long marriage but 36 years of a beloved local eatery. Naturally, I ordered country style ham, country steak and also some green beans, spinach and okra. Everything was delicious, especially the sweet tea! After my meal, I bought a commemorative t-shirt, which Tommy signed. He was even kind enough to pose for a quick photo! I am sad to see The Ham House close its doors, but I 'm happy to have the many memories I do, and to have my shirt and photo which I can keep for years and years to come. Thank you Tommy, and thank you to everyone at Tommy 's Country Ham House for all the years of fond memories.
