We had an ingenious meal that I felt was worthy of a Michellin star* When I say local, this is a underwater of Bordeaux so well known... well beyond location, given the quality of food here. Worth a visit. Just something, I notice other reviews refer to Sunday noon and when we asked that she saud them closed Sundays...?
25 of us sat at noon the day before my son's wedding. We had all pre-ordered so I was surprised when some people didn't get what they ordered because the restaurant ran out. Apart from that, the food was good, but I couldn't describe it as a fine food. We all enjoyed a happy meal on the terrace.
Very good kitchen service. enjoy a lunch on a river wine menu of good choice in the Pessac-leogan area
We stayed with some ex-pat friends of ours in Bordeaux and asked them to recommend a restaurant to which we could take them as some small recompense for their hospitality. Our hostess speaks French fluently so there was absolutely no excuse for the disgraceful attitude...of those responsible for our service that evening. We should have known when we ordered aperitifs; two kirs(no problem) and two gin and tonic. Waiter reaction No gin, no tonic . Ok we are in France, but seriously, in a restaurant with some pretentions of fine dining to have no stock of either is inexcusable. Le Gavroche in London seems to manage OK. This should have served as an awful warning, but further disappointments followed. We looked through the wine list and one of the wines had been crossed through, which implied rather that the others on the list would be available. Our friends are knowledgeable about local Bordeaux wines and we duly selected one from the list only to be told by our waiter that it was not available. Je suis desole Monsieur . Choosing a meal was relatively angst free by comparison except that two of the dessert courses had to be ordered with the starters and main course, even though one of them was a straightforward french Tarte aux pommes with ice cream! My choice of main course was pigs trotters. This after much consideration, but I felt that rather than choosing a safer option I should try something new. What arrived was a sausage shaped roll of disgusting inedible fat. There should have been a mushroom stuffing but this was barely discernable. There was no meat of any description to be seen. We asked for the manager/ head waiter whose attitude was totally uncompromising. This was how the dish was served in France; take it or leave it. No attempt was made to offer any alternative. I asked him to take it away which he did. About ten minutes later he came back and said there would be no charge for this dish. The point was not whether the dish was acceptable or not, it was the totally unacceptable attitude of the staff who seem to have forgotten that customers are of some importance to a successful business. I may be old fashioned but if I find a plate of food unacceptable I do not expect to be spoken to like an ignorant peasant. Nobody present at the table would have been able to eat this dish and our friends explained calmly and in fluent French why we thought it was unacceptable. They said that they had eaten the same dish at other restaurants and that it lokked nothing like what was offered here. He was adamant that that what we had been given was authentic and properly served. That was that. We had preordered one of the desserts which was eaten. We then paid and left. Had our experience been different we would probably have spent another 100 or so euros. Some of the other food was OK. However, if you decide to go be prepared to enjoy everything that is put in front of you and to accept that some things may not be available. If not there is a good chance that you will be insulted. Be warned!
We went for a large wedding party, and enjoyed a four hour relaxed delicious lunch on the outside patio. Every dish was excellent, and the service for such a large group was excellent. We loved the location with the old church across the pond with...trees shadowing it all. We couldn't choose between the scallops and the sea bass, so we had them both and they were both great!
