As a beer lover, I was very curious about De Abt: the only restaurant in Belgium specialized in the Trappist beer Orval. In the basement there is Orval, Orval knick-knacks on the wall, a menu with Orval. Sounds good, right? For those who don't know, Orval can be stored for a long time. Years, decades even. With a cellar, I expected and hoped to be able to enjoy a very old Orval, but the most recent one is from 2021 and not intended for consumption. Very unfortunate. Also on tap was Stella Artois, Tripel Karmeliet. Bottled Omer, Leffe, etc., and other Trappist beers. Countless breweries worldwide are very enthusiastic about Orval, the beer menu could have been much more interesting. Orval would be included in the Orval menu. The starter was a cheese croquette. Tasty, but not special. The main course was a chicken stew, served with fries (see photo). The chicken was quite dry and the sauce the chicken was in was honestly reminiscent of something from a Chinese takeaway. I was allowed to take my own salad. Dessert was a chocolate mousse, rich and rich, actually the tastiest on the menu. The service was smooth and friendly. I was early and alone, when I walked out the door the place was full and everything seemed under control. The menu with a beer and a double espresso came to 49 euros, which is a reasonable price but not in relation to the poor quality of the meal.
