Waldhaus Restaurant GmbH

The location is great, especially on a sunny day, the lake and the woods invite for a stroll after the meal. The food was good, if pricey. Unfortunately we were stuck with a waitress who was poor at engaging with customers. She didn’t go beyond the absolutely necessary exchange and was unable to deal with special requests. Shame! We decided against booking the restaurant for our next family reunion. There seems to be a policy of not accepting credit cards.

Had lunch with family in this restaurant with amazing views of the lake. The service was excellent and waiter attentive. There was an extensive menu, and it was hard to decide what to eat. I had the Sauerbraten which was excellent. The servings were large and reasonably priced. Next time I visit Essen I would return to this restaurant but with cash in hand. PLEASE BE AWARE that they DO NOT take Visa, Master Card or Amax. I was going to pay but as they did not take any of these cards my cousin stepped in and paid. Not sure what would have happened if she was not able to help. This is the first time I have been to a large established restaurant where they do not take these type of cards.

We stayed at this hotel for two nights in a room with balcony and lake view. The hotel was very convenient, short walk from the train station and they provide free shuttle if you carry many suitcases. The room was clean and the lake view (both the room and the dining hall) was amazing. We were able to do a bit of jogging around the lake before/after our sightseeing in the morning/afternoon and that was absolutely delightful. Breakfast was alright but they tend to reserve nicer window tables for “some” guests but not all (which we had no idea how it worked). We arrived on the first morning and one of the ladies in the dining hall was very particular on which table we had to sit but kept talking to us in “non-English”. We tried to understand what she meant but couldn’t and the whole situation was very unfortunate and frustrating. At the end, we followed her “order” (thank god) but seriously, she could have been nicer though...so be aware!

The restaurant is in a lovely setting and the food was delicious. The choices are varied and the portions are large. The sauerbraten was above expectations. Service is excellent and quick. Our dinners were so good, we decided to go again and try their pumpkin soup. Another great choice! Reservations are definitely recommended.

Had dinner here last night. The property is gorgeous with amazing views of the lake and park. The restaurant speaks upscale with the beautiful appointments and prompt service. Servings are large and reasonably priced. Everything tasted good and we were able to linger over coffee and enjoy the view.
