Stopped at what we thought was "Hot Rods Diner" - a fairly new takeaway/sit down themed joint on the corner of Railway and Cochrane streets recently. The place had received mixed reviews ... mostly OK - so we thought we'd give it a try. Something didn't look quite right inside and when we asked the girl, she told us that the place had very recently been taken over and was now Hannants Takeaway. Sign out the front later confirmed this. Nice imaginative title there!!!So ... what to do - we had all agreed that we'd try "Hot rods" for the first time it had been in this building for the past year and a bit or so, and we'd had a fair drive to get there. Ah well ... we were there now, so let's give it a shot. If the place had just changed hands, the new lot should be eager to please ...... right???Ordered 2 crispy chicken and salads, a Thai beef and salad, and a chicken burger - at $7 each; and a chicken nuggets and chips at $5.Decided we'd eat in at one of the booth type tables .... which is what we would have done anyway ... had the place been "Hot Rods". Noticed that we were the only folks there, apart from a small table of very obviously itinerant farm workers.Food arrived to the table after a stock standard wait, and we were immediately taken aback by the packaging ..... we had told the lass we were "eating in" - and obviously expected the food to be served on dishes. The salads were all presented in Chinese plastic takeaway type containers. We asked the lady about cutlery, as none arrived with the food. She indicated a container which we hadn't previously noticed at the far edge of the table holding prepacked plastic cutlery in plastic bags. TACKY!!!Now this cutlery wasn't your average stuff .... it was unlike any I'd seen before. Designed for midgets/leprechauns .... or children maybe. So these guys have already earned zero out of 5 for their environmental credentials ... and we decided to take our dishes home with us for recycling .... since the place didn't seem the type that would be likely to voluntarily do this!!The food .... Chicken salads comprised a small slab of chicken finely sliced, sitting atop a standard salad, with a tiny smattering of those small packaged noodles tossed in. Meat had a thin coating of sorts and was indeed crispy. The "Thai" beef likewise comprised a small slab of beef, again thinly sliced, with a very, VERY generous serving of sweet chilly sauce; also sitting atop the standard salad. The salads were almost all lettuce, with nearly absent tomato and cucumber, and other stuff partially represented .... may have been carrot and capsicum from memory. The burger was a smallish chicken fillet - perhaps similar to the crispy chicken, with a slab of that awful "plastic" cheese, lettuce and a dry-ish mustard-y sauce. The bun was neither toasted nor warmed.Nuggets were standard reheated frozen fare - six of them. On a bed of standard takeaway chips. Presented in styrofoam - that really poor choice for food that's meant to be served crispy .... that unfortunately a lot of fast food places endorse for "I don't know why" reasons. The chicken was rated at 1 out of 5 by one that had it, mainly due to the odd salad, which as I said comprised mainly chunks of lettuce, and the sauce that she described only as "weird". She is a big eater ... but physically couldn't finish the dish. The beef dish was rated at 2 out of 5 - same score on the salad; and this participant made the exasperated comment that you "couldn't just put a squirt of chilly sauce on something and call it "Thai"!! She also felt that there was far too little in the meal. The burger was rated at 1.5 out of 5. Seriously .... if you are presenting burgers on unwarmed/untoasted buns in this day and age, then don't expect to be in business for long!!!The nuggets were pretty much stock standard ... and all at the table agreed that the best part of the entire meal were the chips that came with the nuggets. A good serve, and reasonably done. This seems a strange saving grace, wouldn't you say??!! How do you rate frozen nuggets and frozen chips that were reheated in the deep fry?? He says "3".Everybody left the place still hungry ... and we had a "proper" feed when we got home. Comment made by one of our party was the place represented a decent concept, poorly executed, and that they seriously needed to lift their game, especially having just taken over the place. I can only agree - the last thing an eatery needs is for customers to be leaving with the unanimous outcome of being underfed!!
I have eaten here on more than one occasion. I have always found the food to be of good quality and value. The staff are always friendly and cheerful. All in all a good takeaway experience.
