Great Lakes Cafe - Gary

Great experience server was excellent, prompt, friendly and helpful. Suggested the chicken and ham sandwich on croissant. They were doing Christmas in July and felt like an old school diner locked in time. Definitely will be going back FYI breakfast stops at 11am

Worth the hunt for this great diner. Friendly staff serves home style meals. It looks that Great Lakes Cafe is almost companion diner to a steel mill.

Kid-friendliness: What an amazing restaurant this was! After a flight cancellation and 8 hours in the car with two toddlers, Google Reviews brought us to Cindy and her 7.5 old year old granddaughter Gloria. My husband caught some shut eye in the car and I walked in at 6 am with the kiddos. The restaurant was busy filling takeout orders and Cindy was cleaning tables. She assured me the restaurant was kid friendly. The coffee, omelette with hashbrowns and butter toast hit the spot and my kids enjoyed the pancakes with a side of syrup for dipping but then the highlight of the operation walked in — Gloria! Knowing my husband was sleeping and we weren’t in a rush to leave, she came over to play with my kids and invited them to color and to the “kids corner” where she shared her toys and taught my son how to play Operation. Instead of being put out by our extended breakfast stay, Cindy not only encouraged me to get comfortable but also invited me to move tables to be closer to the kids. She connected me with other patrons who were all curious about how we found our way to Gary and Great Lakes Cafe. One of whom even paid for our breakfast! On this morning at the end of June, Great Lakes Cafe showered us with kindness, generosity and hospitality. It was a delightful and unexpected experience that rates in my top 5 most memorable restaurants, ever. If you get the chance, go there, meet the locals, see what the New York Times wrote about them not too long ago, and support this family-owned business.

Excellent food and excellent service! This gem is just right outside the plant (USSteel Gary Work).
