I'm writing this after I just came back from a meal with my family at Mo Ran Gak in Garden Grove. It's an unpleasant experience, but I think I should let you know. The attached photo contains foreign objects (plastic shards) and a bowl similar to the one from which the foreign objects came from. You may not be able to see it clearly, but you should see about two spots in the bottom of the bowl that look like dents. This is probably where the shards came from. I ate the food (and the shards) from the bowl the shards came from. The subsequent complaint process with the restaurant overshadowed the intention to handle it as smoothly as possible. Note that the bowl in the photo is not a bowl from which these foreign objects have come off. This bowl is another similar bowl, and the restaurant server checked its bottom to show that the other bowls were okay. But, this bowl is no different. Perhaps the bowl has been dented to the bottom due to excessive use of the bowl for a long time. This is enough to be observed with the naked eye, shouldn't it be discarded immediately? I don't know how many of these expired bowls are used, but if all 2 of the 2 bowls I checked are like this, it's too much to say that it's a mistake. I haven't met the owner, but he may choose to use these outdated bowls for cost savings, but would it be okay if the customer had to ingest foreign substances without their knowledge due to that choice? I hope the owner, assuming he is a conscientious owner, would not try to destroy evidence immediately after reading this article. Or maybe it's already in progress. I plan to file a complaint with the sanitation authorities, but I am posting because I do not want any more victims.
The best cold noodle (naengmyung) restaurant in Orange County—it's even better than the ones in Koreatown! The only downside is the long waits; they can be exceptionally long, with my friends often waiting about an hour. Parking can also be a challenge, so be prepared to drive around a bit to find a spot. However, the incredible naengmyung makes it all worthwhile. Just come ready to search for parking and be patient with the wait, and you'll be rewarded with some delicious cold noodles!
The kalbi and seafood pajun is always great! My dad loves the naengmyun. The side dishes are excellent, as always. Speaking Korean is an advantage when ordering here. I was surprised not only that I got bindaetteok, which was off the menu, but that they remembered that I like, miss, and don't get much opportunity to get it. Arrived at 1pm on Thursday for lunch and was slightly surprised by a short wait. Maybe 2pm next time.
The prices here are quite high, especially for a food court, so be prepared to spend a bit. While watching the chef prepare our meal, I noticed her moving around the kitchen, grabbing items from the fridge and putting them back without covering them, all while chopping ingredients. Coming from a food service background, this struck me as quite unsanitary. After taking my seat, our food was ready in about ten minutes. The cashier called out our order, and I picked it up. The bibimbap was sizzling in its black stone bowl, topped with a fried egg, radishes, bean sprouts, spinach, mushrooms, pickled vegetables, a small portion of beef, and a bed of white rice. I mixed it all together to let it cook further. However, my first bite was disappointing; the dish was bland and unexciting. It felt like just rice with a few vegetables and minimal meat. There was a bottle of gochujang sauce provided, but I hesitated to use it because the tip was dirty from previous uses, which killed my appetite. Anyone with food service experience knows that it's essential to clean sauce bottles after each use! The seafood pancake was equally underwhelming—soft, lacking crispiness and color, loaded with squid and shrimp but little else. Overall, my experience was not great; I've had much better Korean food elsewhere, and given the high prices and mediocre quality, I think I’ll look for another place. If they could improve their sanitation practices and add a bit more care to their dishes, I might consider returning.
