We where shamelessly ripped off here. The waiter, in my presence, obviously manipulated the till to produce an inflated bill. She was clearly under orders to do this and...embarrassed when I gasped at the cost. At this point the owner appeared giving several increasingly bizarre reasons for the exorbitant bill. There are many good and honest bars and cafes in Estremoz without bothering about this one. By the way we where charged 5.50 Euros for a wine and a beer, next door it was 1.70, judge for yourself.
We came here specifically because of the building, and the exterior is worth seeing if you're nearby. However, it's nothing special on the inside, and while the service was friendly the food wasn't that good. Probably better off looking from the outside and then going...elsewhere unless you're just after a quick snack.
We arrived at this cafe/restaurant around 15:30 just to have a sandwich since at this time of day most restaurant's kitchens are already closed or about to close. The waitress received us in a very friendly way, despite the late time and told us that if we wished we could have anything on the lunch menu, because they would cook it without any problem. This was good news and we choose to sit outside, because the inside is a little outdated (really needing some work) and it was a very nice weather to eat outside. We shared two dishes: first a octopus in tempura with coriander rice (filetes de polvo com arroz de coêntros) and then a partridge stew over slices of bread (perdiz estufada em tosta de pão alentejano). They were both delicious and in very generous portions, making what was supposed to be a quick bite in an adorable meal.We finished with a selection of deserts for two, composed of several typical Alentejo's sweets (many of them are old recipes from monasteries) which were really tasty. We'll surely repeat the visit when we get back to Estremoz. The only reason for 4 instead of 5 stars review, is because they really need to refresh the interior of this beautiful building.
The restaurant is situated in the main square of this charming town. You can either dine on the first floor or on the pavement. As it had been such a hot day it was lovely to sit outside and take in the atmosphere. The two menu's offer a good choice of full and lighter dishes. The food is beautifully cooked and presented. There is a choice of some excellent local wines. Service by the owner and two enthusiastic young staff is very friendly and efficient. We enjoyed ourselves so much that we returned two days later!
Possibly the best place to eat in Estremoz. Very friendly service, traditional Alentejan food. Good prices. We liked it and even went back several times.
