The main restaurant was reserved up so we went to the bar which also serves the same menu. We were fortunate to have gotten a table that was just being freed up. After being seated our waitress asked if we wanted anything to drink. We gave her our orders and looked at the menu. 10 Minutes after putting in our drink menu our drinks arrived. At this point another table of 6 became available. The waitress left and we waited another 15 minutes before she returned to take our order for appetizers. The table of six was refilled and more tables became available and other patrons seated. After another 15 minutes we began to notice that customers who had been seated after us were being served their meals and we had not yet received either our appetizers nor had we been asked for our food order. People who had come in after we did ordered, received their meals, eaten them, and checked out before we had even received our food. In fact, the whole restaurant turned over while we were there. To make a long story painfully short, we waited 2-1/2 hours from the time we sat down to the time we walked out the door for food that arrived undercooked, cold, and generally tasteless. I wonder if the fact that our daughter is hispanic and our son-in-law is black had ANYTHING to do with the service we received. I think so.
We stayed here last year for the first time, this is our second visit. We love the place, staff, atmosphere, food/drink, service, location, etc. I always ask for the top floor at every place I stay so footsteps above don't wake me. Here there is a lovely Lakeview, top floor. The problem is the water pipes in the wall...LOUD. The kitchen must be below us. We can hear pots being banged around and EVERY time they open a water valve (every minute) it sings in the wall right behind the bed. I wanted to take a nap today, didn't happen. It is now 9pm and you can hear the pipes singing. Sometimes it sounds like someone playing a flute, one long single note. I'm only here for the one night, otherwise I would ask for another room. If you stay here be sure to ask for top floor, away from elevator and ice machine...AND something down the hallway a few rooms. When you enter the hallway we are in the first room, #316.
Went out for lunch at the Grand Ely Lodge restaurant!! Food and the service were both amazing! Beth was our server and she was so sweet!!! The restaurant was very busy and she still provided us with fast service and was incredibly friendly to our table of 6! Service: 5 Location: 5

Stayed here for one night for a work trip and wished I could have stayed longer! All of my coworkers agreed: Room was exceptionally clean (if a little north woods dated) and very comfortable. Food was great tons of easy options. Just remember to make reservations because it gets BUSY. And the service was top notch I just stayed at the 5 star Mandarin Oriental in Jakarta for my honeymoon and I told my husband that I felt more welcomed at the Grand Ely. I’m already looking for dates for when I can bring the family up for a few days.
