It is traditional Austrian cuisine, but very good at very affordable prices. Service is good, the terrace... is also. From the outside the place looks everything but spectacular and it is located in a small industrial area. But don't let this fool you: worth a stop.
Very good restaurant with good and simple staff. You must be reserved and if you have special wishes you can reserve a few days before. The fish specialities are large and the cottage cheese dumplings are wonderful! God wine selection and beautiful guest gardens.
We dined at the Auerhahn with friends on St. Martin's day and the restaurant was fully booked for the occasion. St. Martin's day is associated with goose any style. The restaurant did a marvelous job with my roasted goose that arrived crisp and was accompanied...by red cabbage, bread dumplings, Brussels sprouts, fried celeriac and a wonderful sauce. The menu featured regional and seasonal dishes and all in our party swooned over their selections. The cheese dumplings for desert warrant extra mention for their delicate flavor and consistency. The tables were generously spaced apart and the service was friendly but a bit taxed by the full house. The restaurant is a bit off the beaten path and can best be reached by cab or car.
My husband and I ate at this restaurant tonight, after reading the reviews and comments about it. We ordered dinner, and it was a VERY long time coming. The restaurant only had a few folk dining- they weren 't rushed off their feet. We were given...complimentary snacks to start with then waited ages for the meal. When it did finally come, I saw there was a dead fly in my salad! Yuk! And this at a top restaurant? How long had it been there? I complained to the waiter who came back with a fresh salad, but that had old brown edges to the salad leaves and was definitely not up to standard. To their credit, they didn 't charge for my meal, and my husband had a lovely meal, but it certainly has put me off.
Auerhahn Restaurant is truly a hidden gem in Salzburg. Excellent food and service, but very resonable prices. Whether sitting in the front room with its beautiful hand hewn ceiling beams or next to the fire in the more modern room that looks out onto the garden...terrace, the atmosphere is very elegant and welcoming. Food is top notch we ate here twice and recommend the lamb and venison as well as the fresh lake char (fish). Good wine list from local producers. The chef is also more than willing to create a vegetarian dish upon request.
