Chico's Cantina - Elburn

I have a love-hate relationship with Chico's. The food is great, but I've often walked in and waited 5-10 minutes for someone to help me at the counter. There are times when the place is just closed in the middle of the day, even with the open sign lit. On one occasion, I went inside, rang the bell, and noticed the back door was propped open. I waited and waited because my wife wanted tacos. After a while, I started to get concerned, so I called the non-emergency number, thinking something might be wrong. The police came to check it out and found the place empty—grill on, salsa out, music playing, but nobody there. All I want is some consistency!

We recently ordered the burrito suizo and were disappointed that we weren't allowed to add our own hot sauce. The burritos came covered in a very thin sauce and were served on flimsy foil. When I tried to cut into the burritos, the foil tore, and I ended up with a piece stuck in my throat. I've had much better authentic Mexican food at other places.

This was my first visit, and I was really impressed with the food! The portions are generous, and the cuisine feels authentic. They don’t accept credit cards and don’t serve alcohol, but that shouldn’t deter you from coming here. The owner is very friendly as well. I enjoyed the fajitas, while my wife had the flautas, and both were delicious!

It has been awhile since I had been here, went for the three taco dinner this evening. I chose the steak and it was outstanding as good as any other hole in the wall taco joint I've been in lately, bonus it's close to home.

Chico's is a great option for takeout. Having grown up in Texas, I take my Mexican food seriously and don't care for most Mexican food served in the Midwest. Chico's is authentic Mexican. We've enjoyed the tacos, enchiladas, and carne asada.
