I'm torn about this review. I'm giving it 3 stars because the service was horrendous but the food - pretty darn good!We were the ONLY patrons of the restaurant on a Thursday evening. I came here with family so there were 7 of us.The lady working the front of house although nice initially, ended up being quite rude after taking our order. We ordered about 10 dishes. She came back to tell us on two separate occasions that two different dishes they were unable to make to the menu's specifications because they didn't have all of the ingredients. So we changed a couple items to accommodate. After that, whenever she brought out a dish - she would literally drop/shove it onto the table and proclaim what "number" of dish was off the menu. My dad tried asking her the first few times what the dish was called - and she would respond with the same thing - the menu item number. And my dad would have to say "but what is the name of the dish?" and she would tell you or she'd be already walking off. It got to be so bad that he stopped asking and she kept dropping off dishes telling us their number and I actually laughed because the service was so bad it was comical. So yeah - terrible terrible service. Also, she never once offered to bring anything to drink, like water or tea. We sat there for a full 20 minutes before I had to get up and go to her at the front counter to ask if we could get something to drink. What gives?!The food though? Thankfully WAY better than the service.Highlights:- Deep-fried tofu puffs: salty, spicy and sweet- BBQ Tofu Skin: savoury and good- Cilantro Cakes: soft and fresh and so good with the sweet and sour dipping sauce- Shanghai noodle stir-fry: had great "wok-hay" and umami flavour- Fried rice: great textural contrasts with bits of crunchy bitsDisappointments:- Curry dish- Sizzling plate with bamboo shoots: the plate was not even remotely sizzling when it arrived and the taste was oddOn the bright side as well, the establishment seems clean. The propaganda under the table tops gives you something to look at while eating. But they skimp bigtime on napkins. So the lesson is - go for the food, not the service!
Don't be put off but where it's located because inside in clean and very relaxing. I really enjoy the "fake" fried chicken, it tastes like real chicken. The sweet and sour soup was delicious too. I highly- recommend this hidden gem to anyone looking to have great vegan food
We went here when we had some family visiting that are vegan. The food is very good. My ten year old loved it, and so did our company, The only issue we had was one of the food items was a bit on the cold side, but we just ate it anyway.
While not in the best area of town, this place is well worth a visit. The food is fabulous, one problem is that almost everything includes soy and if you have someone in your party who is allergic to soy it makes it difficult. We were able to make do. The food is not greasy at all, not like most Asian restaurants. Extremely flavourful and we will be going back many times. Do yourself a favour and try the veggie garden restaurant.
