If you are trying Haggis for the first, second or third time, this location is a great place to try it. The Haggis is very tasty and comes as a small serving (if you like) so great for trying or as a snack. This restaurant is located in the lower section of the city and well worth looking for. Keep an eye out for men in kilts
The restaurant was only half full on a Saturday night, and I believe I know why; we were still hungry after two courses! The atmosphere was pleasant, and the staff were friendly, but the portions were small and the prices were high for what you received. Upon arrival, we were served bread with dipping oil and balsamic vinegar, but the French bread lacked a crispy crust. For starters, two of us ordered calamari, which was tasty but soggy, while another had a Chinese-style beef dish that was also enjoyable. The main courses we ordered were coconut chicken with rice, gumbo, and beef cheeks with mashed potatoes, all of which were delicious but served in smaller portions than expected. We each also had a glass of wine. The bill came to £88 for three people, not including the bags of chips we bought on the way home. The bill did not offer the 'pay it forward' option, so we chose to pay extra so that a homeless person could have a decent meal, although we hoped they would receive a larger portion than we did.
The restaurant, now known as Vesta, has shifted its focus to vegetarian and vegan food while maintaining a social aspect of paying it forward. However, the prices have increased significantly and there is no longer a fixed price menu for lunch and dinner. This change may result in a loss of customers. During a recent lunch visit, the restaurant was not very busy, possibly due to the high prices. Although the menu was creative and the food was good, it was not exceptional and seemed overpriced. For example, the roast duck salad was pricey at £12.50 for only a few slices of duck and a lot of lettuce. Dessert options were limited and service was slow, with a long wait between courses. Unfortunately, we will not be returning as the current pricing and lack of a fixed price menu may not be sustainable for Vesta in the long run.
Great French restaurant in a nice area of Edinburgh. Loved all our food choices and prices are reasonable. Fish chowder, Rabbit stew, Beef bourguignon all were great!
