The Black Horse Inn, Grainthorpe

Staff were very friendly but they don’t seem to have been given any real training, it’s chaotic and they do their best. They work well as a team but that’s because they have to as they are trying to help each other out. I’m not an expert in hospitality but I would suggest the management need to think about how they run the restaurant perhaps giving each member of staff a specific number of tables a section so they are able to look after the customers and monitor the tables they are responsible for. Some examples of this, no updates from the staff when we had been waiting for the food for a significant amount of time and they could clearly see we were getting frustrated, also we had nothing from the staff for ages and then three four members of staff came along within ten mins and asked the same questions and tried to clear our plates away whilst we were still eating. Food was good, however it took far too long to arrive from the kitchen. We waited minutes for our orders to be taken, then minutes for two cold starters (a bread board and a prawn cocktail) to arrive and then another minutes for our roast dinners to arrive, this was after the starters were cleared away. I know restaurants appreciate this sort of feedback face to face when you are there but it looked like the Manager was having a really bad day with several customers complaining and the last thing she probably needed was another customer complaining and to be honest we just wanted to get out of there as quickly as possible and get home. Two hours for a Sunday lunch is ridiculous particularly when you have a very hungry five year old child who has been looking forward to a Sunday roast, is not much fun.

The service was repellent. The staff had no retention span to take and remember any information. I’m fact they did one better by bringing drinks to the table that we hadn’t ordered Overall, it was a highly irritating and downright disrespectful evening Well done: In a few hours the staff complete destroyed any vestiges of reputation they had. I have been going to THE BLACK HORSE in Fulmer since the early and the owners have managed to ruin it. In my opinion they believe the look of the building and interior design of the building will run the business for them. An indication that they could be mistaken is the fact that there was only one other couple in the building and young people inhabiting the plastic bubbles outside like some sort of novelty experience.

Really nice gastropub have visited a few times now. Good location with great outdoor dining/pobs when weather good.
