The China Rose - Doncaster

The food at this restaurant is delicious, but it is quite pricey for the portion sizes. It is a great spot for a fancy meal out. My only complaint is that the service could be improved. While nothing terrible occurred, I believe a little more enthusiasm and a smile from the staff would greatly enhance the dining experience. Considering the high prices and the fact that many patrons visit for special occasions, top-notch service should be provided.

Yesterday was my second visit to China Rose. I have to say I do not understand the hype around this place at all. The restaurant itself now looks tired, dated, and in need of a refurb. There seemed to be a surplus of staff just standing about yet the service was not attentive at all. My quid started was nice, but nothing special. My monkfish main was gloopy and tasteless. The restaurant claims to be Cantonese yet the dessert menu consisted entirely of non-Cantonese, low-quality desserts, that I imagine come in frozen. A disappointing (but not completely awful) experience; will probably never go back.

Impressive dining area; beautifully decorated and set for Christmas. Great party atmosphere and entertainment (Take That tribute). Enjoyable food, plentiful amounts. Very efficient service to very large numbers. The young men women serving at tables are very well trained indeed, really polite and friendly really seem to enjoy what they’re doing; refreshing!

Unfortunately we had to cancel our booking on Friday 20th October due to the flooding of roads caused by storm Babet. We live about 40 minutes from the restaurant and at the time it was considered unwise to travel especially as our friends are in their 70s and were afraid of getting stranded. We asked if it would be ok to move our booking to Sunday 22nd October and I was told that wouldn’t be a problem but we would lose our £60 deposit. We were told that we could have a take away but as we couldn’t travel it didn’t help. Not very customer friendly and very disappointing. We first ate there 30 years ago but unfortunately we won’t be returning!

Really enjoyed our time here , great service food delicious, veggie pancake rolls to die for could have done with a chilli dip) my husbands only bugbear No chow mein no chips , but excellent
