Happi Sushi Review. Originally I was hesitant to go, but it was raining outside and I didn't want to walk 3 blocks to my car. So I ventured through the skywalk with low expectations.<br/ <br/ The ambiance is what it is… It is a small skywalk restaurant with 2 tables. It is well lit, but impressively clean and to order, you need to do so at the register. <br/ When it comes to ordering I have eaten a lot of sushi, but I am a novice when it comes down to it. This didn't seem to bother the lady at the register; she was friendly and very patient with me. <br/ <br/ I ended up getting the spicy tuna combination for just under $10. It includes 1 roll (eight pieces), salad (seaweed or ginger), fruit, and soup. It was presented well in a neat plastic try that separated each of the items. The soup was served in a separate container.<br/ <br/ When I got back to my desk opened the bag and they had put everything I ordered and everything I needed eat my meal (spoon, chop sticks, napkin, and Dixie cup with soy sauce). I started with the Miso soup and it was hot! I am always shocked to find hot soup when I do take out! And the bigger surprise… it was very tasty! It wasn't watery tasting and it had big pieces of seaweed and chunks of tofu. At this point, I did not know what to expect next. So I moved on to the salad. Yum!!! I found myself slowing down to eat it piece by piece. <br/ <br/ Now after a great start, I still was not expecting much out of the spicy tuna roll. So I put a little wasabi on it (way too much), dipped in the soy sauce and took a big ol' bite! After the fire settled, I realized that one… I put way too much of that green stuff on there. And two, most importantly, that wasn't the low grade stuff. Now on the second piece but slowly and methodically. I didn't put anything on it so I would not hide anything and the flavors were there! The fish was fresh and not hidden by the spice. There was the delicate balance of all flavors. Simply put, it was a great, well balanced, flavorful piece of sushi. So on the third piece, a touch of wasabi and a little soy sauce and that is when I realized the rain was fate. I was supposed go to Happi Sushi on that miserable day. <br/ When I finished the last piece I was kicking myself for not getting an extra roll or a couple pieces of nigiri. I continued to sulk and I finished the fresh fruit salad that was included in the combo. This was a nice finish to my lunch. However, I was full but still yearned for another piece of sushi.<br/ <br/ I have been back several times and do want to point out that they have an ala carte menu with a large selection. <br/ <br/ Amongst the fried food and foot longs sandwich lunch establishments, Happi Sushi gives me a fresh and different option to eat out for lunch (and they are only open for lunch M-F). The quality and taste of this sushi is comparable to Waterfront, Taki, Appare, Miyabi 9, etc, etc. I highly recommend it and hope you get to enjoy it.
I am not a sushi fan so I got the boxed salmon terryaki... sooooo good and reasonably priced!!!
Excellent owners, service, and sushi. Fast and friendly service.
Sushi Master offers incredibly fresh fish and consistently high quality. It's one of the best sushi bars in Des Moines. Highly recommended!
