A bakery with pizza?! Unheard! We got an eclaire and a veggie slice, both were delicious!
Whether pizza, scones, breads, desserts, this place is a local treasure!
This is my favorite baguette after King Arthur Flour Bakery's baguette (in Vermont)! And their pastries are great too!
The Village Bakery is one of the first spots you encounter upon disembarking from an Amtrak train, making it a convenient stop before or after travel. The outdoor seating is pleasant and offers some shade. Both the man at the counter and the chef-owner were friendly and accommodating. I tried a slice of veggie pizza for $3.50 and a mixed berry scone for $2.50. The food looked appealing across the board; they had tempting eclairs and cream puffs, but I managed to exercise some restraint. The vegetable selection on the pizza was excellent, featuring nicely caramelized onions, zucchini, and peppers. It wasn’t overloaded with sauce or cheese, and most of the cheese used was feta, which complemented the vegetables nicely. The scone was delightful—crumbly, light, and dusted with icing sugar, bursting with the flavors of blackberries and blueberries. I’m awarding Village Bakery 4.5 "green stars" for their social and environmental impact based on the following reasons: - They prioritize local fruits and vegetables whenever possible, and everything is made in-house. - For their pizza, they use olive oil for the crust, unlike many other pizza places, making it a generally sustainable choice. - They source organic tomatoes for their pizza sauce when they are in season and affordable. - On the bakery side, their dairy comes from Crystal Creamery. Based on my research, I’d say they fall somewhere in the middle—not as impressive as an organic creamery like Strauss, but certainly better than brands like Dean Foods or Berkeley Farms. - They generate minimal waste; pizza is served on paper plates, and bakery items are placed in paper bags. Using unbleached, recycled paper would be a nice improvement. I believe the utensils and lids were conventional plastic. - Two out of the three pizzas available were vegetarian. If you’ve ever written a green star review, I’d love to hear from you, or if you’d like to learn more!
