This charming and cozy pub has a welcoming atmosphere with friendly staff and regular customers. They serve the best pint of Cameron’s Strongarm in town, as well as John Smiths Smooth and Bass on hand pull, along with three other guest real ales. They also offer a good selection of spirits at reasonable prices. It's rare to find a pub like this nowadays, with a great atmosphere and no TVs. If you enjoy a quiet chat and superb real ale, this is the perfect pub for you.
This pub in Darlington was our second choice on our list of pubs to visit, but it ended up being the best out of the five we visited. They had a great selection of real ale and the pint we chose was perfect. The pub had a nice mix of customers, and the landlord thanked us as we left and hoped we enjoyed our drinks. We would definitely go back and recommend it to everyone as a traditional pub with great ale and friendly service.
I came in here during my stay in Darlington because I'd read the good reviews on here. Often they don't pan out; but in this case they are spot on--it's a wonderful pub. The ideal bar (but rare) for me is one that sells good real ales, has a nice look to it, friendly staff, and sociable fellow drinkers. The Britannia ticked all those boxes with ease. The lady from Northallerton serving was a most smily and helpful person, who consults a huge tome about breweries to make sure she knows her stuff. She was good-humoured and welcoming--I don't know if she's an owner or an employee, but she's an asset. Other drinkers include you in an easygoing way, in this miniature, perfectly formed old pub, which is really only a stonethrow from the centre of town, so should not be missed as peripheral. I was given plenty of help by all on the best places to drink on my ale trail of the town.
Just a bit out of town but a pub worth a visit. A local's local but made to feel welcome and the beer we had was well kept. Would come here again.
