Pulqueria insurgentes - Cuauhtémoc

We went three times and each time had different flavors of pulque. They had four each time. Nice terrace sitting. Mellow music. Prompt service. They have other alcohols as well.

This was right down the street from our air bnb and I’m glad we found it. Plenty of cheap drinks and lots to see. There are 3 maybe four floors to explore. Each floor was packed with people enjoying themselves. Head to the back for a staircase that heads upstairs.

Being a lover of history, art, culture, and food I had to try Pulque while in Mexico city. Having read of the drink being thousands of years old, and a beverage used by many Aztec era nations and tribes, I wanted to at least try. The cab driver insisted this was the best place to sample it given the eccletcic crowd. My wife was frightened. She said never in her life did anyone ever take her to such a dive. Yes its a dive. It has graffiti on the walls and celining in neon colors with stainless steel tables reminding me of a dairy barn. It 's dark, dingy and dirty with sticky tables and floors. Pulque has the consistency and taste of drinking shampoo. I already knew that however. My wife was disgusted when after her first slip the gummy concoction stuck to her lip and created a string that stretched to the glass. Maybe we should have tried the 'curado ' which is supposedly filtered. After sticking to the tables (covered with gooey pulque residue) which got on to our clothes .... we left after a few sips. Not my thing or hers but I 'm happy I at least can say I tried a pulqueria which is an ancient Aztec tradition! Definitely and experience. I did not feel unsafe however. I 've felt more unsafe in the states at a Hooters tavern when bikers visit than I was here. But given my wife was uncomfortable I had to accomodate her and leave.

I tried the curado de betabel, and loved it. The place is clean and fun to visit. Near Metrobús Durango.

We were spending a couple of nights in CDMX, found this spot online and decided to check it out. Ended up going two nights in a row since we liked it a lot! Staff were great, super nice and always running around checking on people. Pulque was yummy and reasonably priced. Had rock band one night, jazz trio another night. No cover charge : place is very casual, variety of ages (looked like mostly 20s to late 30s . Will be back next time we're in the City!
