Driving by this dimly lit space brings memories of cool walks in Manhattan where softly lit pizza shops enamor the senses. The exposed brick and the wood accents of the tables and other fixtures give this place the 'industrial-urban-chic ' feel that is so sought after these days, and that many New York restaurants are known for. As such, Mattarello is a cool place, and the sight alone makes you feel like a little place from Manhattan has taken residence in Querétaro. Mattarello functions as a bonafide pizzeria, selling only salads and Neapolitan style pizzas. As it promises, the crust is thin and crispy, and while flavorful, the dough is not as good as its New York counterparts, which have more texture and even better flavor. However, this does not demerit the tastefulness offered by the pizzas. Both the Giulia, featuring Serrano ham and Parmesan, and the traditional Margherita leave nothing to be desired, but rather a good dining experience in a neatly designed space. While the salads and sauces might suffer from over-saltiness, the flavor combinations are fresh and tasty, but this might all be part of the initial kinks that any restaurant suffers during its first months. This place still remains as a very enjoyable experience, and I truly hope that it 'll continue to grow and will one day be bustling with people like that familiar NY pizza scene.
