The Barley Sheaf At Gorran

We were told this was a great pub, however, in our view it was at best average. The food was ridiculously expensive £10 for a limp treacle tart) and we ended up waiting for food delivery because they were “really busy”, despite there being tables to spare and 5 or 6 waitresses. When the food did arrive, it was of average qaulity. The fish was full of bones and the sticky toffee was rubbery and had no sauce. The steak was in no way 10 oz and again was “ok” despite costing £30. My son’s burger had been sitting under a heat light for a while and the cheese had not melted. The crowning glory was the addition of a 10% service charge, which I asked to have removed. The ambience was poor 3 4 of the pub drinking area reminded me of our local football team club house, with the other 1 4 with a leather sofa being more of what I expected. The restaurant area was just “ok” with some very questionable art for sale. The bar and restaurant staff were polite and courteous and were the best thing about our visit. I suspect the chef owner has rested on his her laurels and needs a prod hence my post.

Such a disappointing New Year’s Eve celebration meal. Very over priced for ridiculously small portions. There was only one option for vegetarians and I am struggling to see how it was acceptable to charge £65 ahead for it. The main meal consisted on half a mushroom, some broccoli and lentils. The crimble crumble was a joke. Gone in 2 mouthfuls, a spec of ginger dust and it was missing the sorbet. Staff were friendly and efficient but the upstairs dining room was cold with no atmosphere. Such a shame as we were so looking forward to it and had heard such great reviews You don’t expect to spend that sort of money and have to go home to cook more food Unfortunately the set menu hadn’t been advertised on their website beforehand. If we had known in advanced we would have cancelled our reservation. Sorry but we will not be returning

Absolutely top notch, the menu and the staff are fabulous, the food is superb, the stakes were cooked to perfection. After a fantastic meal we were able to sit and relax in the bar which has a great selection of wines and beers. A hidden gem, well worth the drive off the beaten track.

Great pub with a comprehensive menu and good choice of beers, usually a guest one. I have visited the area on three separate occasions this year and if I am in the area in 2024 I will definitely go back
