It would've been delicious had they not overloaded everything with sugar. It ruined a perfectly good meal. Chefs need to taste what they're cooking for balance.
Ordered takeaway mid week, 15 minute pick up. Everything was fresh and the veges were chunky and crispy. The spring rolls were very ordinary, tasting of a strong, salty soy sauce. I'm not being facetious, but the best dish was by far the coconut rice- hot, sticky and creamy. Definitely not the tastiest or most authentic Thai food I've had (possibly a Chinese influence) but there was nothing wrong. An unremarkable meal.
This place has just gone under new management and for those that previously snubbed this restaurant needs to give it another go. Spring rolls hand made and crunchy veges. Coconut rice that actually taste like it's got coconut rice in it and delivery time within a reasonable wait time.
It's been a while since I visited Brisbane last time. There weren't many change, but this restaurant is changed a lot. Food is good, environment also great. I love Massaman beef and Yellow chic, yet I like them to be a little bit more spicy though. :p
For well over the decade and a half that it has been a go-to option in its suburb, Thai Phoenix has become incredibly popular with the residents and that is for a good reason. The food is quite tasty, and the staff here are really accommodating. What makes this more apparent is I found out from a mere delivery order. The WWE Network had released an exclusive special, not unlike the usual pay-per-view events, called Roadblock. I was still counting it as one, and to keep with the proposed tradition with getting delivery whenever this year WWE played their main events, I went back to MenuLog to arrange the delivery. Trying to mix it up a bit, some Thai seemed good and I had yet to sample this one. If this comes across as a plug for the delivery site, that is completely coincidental. One of the best aspects about MenuLog (and I presume every site for food delivery) is that you can set it for days in advance. That is what I did to make it easier. Mostly I can't really talk that much about the service when it comes to online delivery, however, this ordering in advance gave a good opportunity which was demonstrated. Between when I placed the order, and when it was bound to arrive I got a couple of phone calls from the restaurant to confirm that I had put in the order correctly. One of these times was with half an hour of me placing the order. The other time was a bit later to still confirm it was on, to respectively confirm it was correct and still arranged. This shows a good attention to detail, and that they are far from being complacent with their service. Whether or not it happened, it would not have bothered me, but I will always find something to commend a place on and even before the food was being involved in any way I could point to something. So, a rare opportunity to congratulate them in that regard - that is something that hopefully is inherent with customer service. Well, it was the time, the wrestling was underway with playing, and they pulled up (and from memory, with quite a few minutes to spare) and were really friendly. Can you tell that this place does Thai cuisine? It is essentially what you would expect from the local Thai takeaway. With exception to a few additions here and there, it more or less offers what you would expect. There is the usual range of entrees, the usual lot of soups, the usual curries, usual stir fries and the same kind of rice and noodle dishes. Occasionally and odd extra one would be in there, but this is one of the safest options around (not all of us are adventurous foodies, face it). In saying that it is a safe option, they go above with the possibilities of banquets. There are seven banquet options, with more and more offered, that are at a set price offering a good range of the basic meals they offer each time. So, they are in the know for being a fallback option - and that adds more credit to their reputation already. For a bit of a snack, and getting an entree (because they are often delicious) one that took my eyes was called "Hor-Thong". These are more or less like dumplings, or the signature Thai entree "money bags", where the dumpling is deep-fried. They were filled with minced pork and water chestnuts, plus had a bit of a peanut sauce in them. They were very delicious, hot and crispy and everything they needed to be. To get for the main part of the meals, it was a couple of main dishes. The first one seemed to be a specialty or one that was a bit on the unusual side. No fancy name was given to them, and they went by "Honey Pork Spare-Ribs". Knowing me after all this time, you know that this was one that more than appealed to my eyes. To say the least, it was not quite what I was expecting; I came around to it in the end. For those of you who really like their big bits of meat (and I will testify to that one), you might be a tad disappointed. That is not to say that they skimped on it, but it makes some room for a few vegetables - mainly capsicum. When I got a bit of meat, it fell apart like slowly cooked meat, buttery on the palate. The sauce was good, not overly sweet like it might seem from the name The other meal gotten was a curry of theirs. I opted to get a Panang curry, the peanut-based red curry that is a tad spicier than most standard Thai curries. From memory, the meat that I got with it was beef and it may have said it was a dried curry, but there was good, thick sauce surrounding it (and I am miles away from complaining about that). Hell, I complain so little that it turns into a big heap of praise - I am a sucker for the peanut based sauces and this was so exception. With its thick, rich and heavenly aroma, it was crunchy and smooth on the tongue. The meat and vegetables mixed into it were also fantastic, tender and crunchy plus adding some roundness of flavours to the curry. This hit the spot on the night in an exact bullseye. And to finish that all off, I got these meals with a small order of "Khao Ma-Pao" or coconut rice. This was hot, it was sticky and creamy. Absorbing the sauce effectively, it also was a coolant to the Panang curry. This may not have been the most authentic Thai food that is around, but at the time (and even now) I could not care less. That food was really tasty, and I was also starving at the time so it probably tasted even better than it normally would. It was hot, it was slightly rich, it filled me up really efficiently plus the servings were enough for a couple of leftover meals. Thai Phoenix is above average for Thai food to me (in which that average is quite high itself), and being somewhat of a local I am glad there is another good option in the near vicinity.
